Comments regarding the Protexis Licensing Service

A few days ago, I saw a post in the CorelDRAW.com forums regarding the PSIService executable / service running on the computer after installing CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4. The Protexis Licensing service (PSIservice) appears on computers that have installed recent Corel products or product updates. Protexis is a third-party technology partner that Corel has engaged to provide product licensing protection. With previous versions of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite (up to X3 Service Pack 2), the Protexis technology was only invoked during the activation process and was stored in a DLL on the computer. To enable CorelDRAW Graphics Suite and other Corel product to successfully go through the Windows Vista certification process and to be fully compatible with the new operating system from Microsoft, this DLL needed to be converted into a service. Looking at my computer, this service takes 0% CPU and only 156K of memory.

With CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4, we have included activation technology in out trials to enable you to test the product before purchasing it. The same technology is also used to enable  you to extend your trial for another 15 days for example.  While the downloadable version of the product that can be purchased from the Corel eStore includes activation technology, the full or upgrade boxes you can buy directly from Corel or our channel partners does not include any form of activation. This also means that when you purchase the box of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4, you can simply type in the serial number that is included in your box to convert your evaluation version into a full/upgrade version of X4, without requiring you to uninstall the trial and install the version on the DVD... you should still put the DVD in the drive to get access to all the extras and the screen-saver / wall-paper (if you haven't downloaded it yet).

To summarize, the Protexis Service will never connects to the internet except when the product is activated online. In addition to that, it does not access any data other than the Corel product-licensing and registration information, and it does not negatively affect or interfere with your computer or its Internet access. Our privacy policy is available online if you want more details.
