Error 24 at launch of CorelDRAW X4
Gérard on Graphics
A product management view on the Graphics world, CorelDRAW and much more.

Update - June 2, 2010: I have just posted additional information as well as a special offer for those experiencing the error 24 issue.

Earlier today, some CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4 users started reporting that their product stopped working at launch with the error message "Product Installation Unsuccessful Please Reinstall Error 24". After extensive research with some of the affected users and our internal teams, we can confirm the following:

  • People who have purchased CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4 from either Corel Corporation or Corel's approved channel partners do not appear to be affected by this problem.
  • To the best of our knowledge, this problem is only affecting installations of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4 with serial numbers that have either expired and/or have not been created by Corel Corporation.
  • Recent updates/patches from other software (including operating systems) do not appear to have any link to CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4 no longer launching.
  • This problem might also impact some WordPerfect Office X4 users, for the same reason as CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4 users.

In summary, if you are encountering the error message "Product Installation Unsuccessful Please Reinstall Error 24", you may be in possession of an unauthorized version of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite and be the victim of a software pirate. Please contact the Corel Customer Service team at corel.com/contactus and an agent will be happy to assist you.

Your statement hardly seems convincing - "do not appear to be affected"? They either are or they aren't. It also "might impact on other users". Hardly encouraging.

It would appear you don't seem very sure at all what the problem is. Plus comments in the "Product Installation Unsuccessful Please Reinstall Error 24" thread on this website would suggest that this is not the case.

As a Coreldraw user of 15 years or so, and having assumed as my current software validated fine it is/was fine, I am disappointed in the lack of confidence in this response!

This is a load or rubbish. We purchased our copies of CDR through major local distributor, likewise other companies in our service network. Reason to buy X5, don't think so... ADOBE, here we come.

I think we should make some the major retailers aware of the claims. I don't think they'll appreciate these sort of accusations.

Some of the users that have this problem are large companies, with several licenses, who have purchased the software through large, retailers or agents. This argument of illegal license codes just doesn't stack up.

To the best of my knowledge, this appears to be a desperate attempt to stall what may be large numbers of corporate users from blaming Corel for a bug they may still know nothing about after what might have been an in-depth investigation that took all day. Or not.

If in doubt, blame the customer.

switching to Adobe anyways, absolutely worth by any aspect. Adobe software has leaped lightyears ahead while Corel is getting more and more amateurish, draw looks like toy comparing to CS now. The differences in professional tools and features and productivity is chaotic

As some of the others have requested, I would really appreciate Corel putting in place a scheme whereby we could buy a license at a really good price. This would obviously be a win-win.

Thank you.

"Corel putting in place a scheme whereby we could buy a license at a really good price."

You mean buy again?

I have my license, but now, almost a year after installation, I´ll need search for documents that proof it or so, pay again for a new suite. And sure, I´ll need be happy and singing a love theme, between birds and sunshine.

I´m right?

As posted in the forum, sadly, we do have a very good idea of what is going on. All the serial numbers that have been reported so far have not been released by by Corel Corporation in our boxes but have been generated by using another mechanism such as a serial number generator.

If you purchased authentic Corel software, our Customer Service team will be more than happy to assist you in resolving the matter as quickly as possible.

As a general rule, if you find a price that is to good to be true compared to the one listed on Corel.com or an authorized Corel reseller (these include auction sites and marketplaces), you might want to consider that there is something unauthorized going on. Corel or our partners do not sell products at 50 to 90% discount.

Last time I looked at purchasing software online using a Google search as a starting point top of the list were pirate sites and I honestly couldn't identify them as pirate sites except that the price was just way too cheap.

If you can identify a major retailer selling pirate software then I'd get in quick and see if you can get a reward. Averaged out across the world about 70% of all software used is pirated. Were that allowed to increase to 90% there would be no major releases.

Copy protection costs Corel money and it's a pain for us. Personally I hate files and reg entries being written that I don't know about and can't delete. Once you trip off a copy protection you are doing well if you don't have to reformat the damn drive to resolve it. So I have empathy for those with drama on this.

"If you purchased authentic Corel software, our Customer Service team will be more than happy to assist you in resolving the matter as quickly as possible."

You can bet your life that Corel are pretty concerned that legitimate users may have been effected. There are a lot of reasons to use Adobe software. There are plenty of Corel's supporters who are using CS4/5 including me, as well as software from other vendors, DxO, Aptana, MS etc. You chose software because of how well it does a job. This isn't a reason to dump CGS. If you have a real number support will sort it out.

This is loony. I have contacted customer service and given them my serial number (which was previously validated by COREL!!!!!!!!!). They did not respond by saying my software was not legal, they just suggested I turned the clock back??????? How is this going to be resolved?

Gerard Metrailler wrote re: Error 24 at launch of CorelDRAW X4

Not sure how you previously validated your serial number by Corel... if you mean you registered your serial number, this is not validation.

Dear Gerald

This is now getting silly! Every one understands that when you install the software the serial number is checked by Corel (otherwise you could enter any old rubbish). I my case this all happened quite some time ago so at this moment I simply wouldn't have one clue where all the purchase info is - my life simply isn't that organised. So now I have a situation where I have a product that I bought in good faith and will not be able to return to the seller (because I no longer have that info / evidence to hand) and (about two years after the event) Corel are saying that the serial number may not be valid and have stopped me using the product. This is simply unfair - either it was valid at the time or it was not. You can't 'go back' on a situation that you have previously accepted and ask me to prove myself over something that happened quite a while ago. All quite unfair really. Cheers DG

David,

It might help if you spelled Gerard's name correctly if you are going to address him.

Yes, your serial number is "checked" when you enter it. Unfortunately there are criminals who create "serial number generators" that will pass these tests. That doesn't make them a legitimate number. When you purchased your copy, it included one of these bogus serial numbers. Corel received no money whatsoever for the software you purchased.

If you can find your documentation about the purchase you made, Corel is happy to help you remedy the situation. Without that documentation, there is no way for Corel to know that you purchased the software at all.

DG, with CorelDRAW X4, when you enter a serial number during the installation, we check for a pattern. If you purchase the download version, then yes, we validate that the serial number has actually been sold from Corel through the activation process, but this was not the case for the boxed version of X4. The problems of the last two days certainly make for a very good argument to have activation across all versions of CorelDRAW, which I am certain will make everybody very happy.

Dear FosterCoburn

Plenty of people spell my name wrongly  - not sure it is something to worry too much about!  Anyway on to bigger things - I note that GERARD has made no comment about the response I received TODAY from Corel. I understand the situation and I understand what he is saying - what I don't understand is the fact that Corels actions have now left a lot of money out pocket. I have spent this evening going through old receipts and guess what I can't find the one I need.  So, due to failing in system that I did not create (and one that Corel is party to) I am an awful lot of money out of pocket and I now have lots of useless cdr files that I can now longer open. Gerard seems to think that I should be aware of how things work when i enter a serial number - well guess what until today I had absolutely no idea. I also wonder if corel are telling guys like me (when we enter the serial numbers) that its acceptance doesn't neccessarily mean that its valid? All very strange to me. Cheers DG (or call me whatever you like if you can help me sort this problem out without me spending another big wad of cash).
