Just like so many of you, I also have done lots of things together with Paul. Ventura and other stuff, fonts, inside forums and mailing list and privately. I can't remember how many times he said he would definitely, positively and finally retire from work now, only to go on doing whatever he was doing before... For the benefit of all of us–both as friends and colleagues. Yes, as Yani expressed a couple of messages earlier: it's still exciting how this new technology can bring people together even if they might not see each other in person for decades or never at all during their lives. Coming generations will probably take all this for granted but we who witnessed it to happen and even took some part in forming it–and Paul definitely did his share in all the online forums he participated in–need to pause at moments like this.

Farewell, Paul, you will stay alive in our memories.

I remember a woman came up to me and said, "I resent being made to pray at a business conference."

"Did he *make* you do it?" I answered.

"Well, no, but he asked us to and I thought it was inappropriate."

"Did you learn anything in the seminar?"

"Yes, I learned quite a lot, but that's not the point."

"It is now officially my No. 1 quest to make it be the point."

She went on to become a six-time patron.

Within one week in January my father, a dear friend of over 30 years and Paul..... gone.

I never met or spoke with Paul, except thru the Corel posts and emails when he was helping me with a job a couple of years ago. He always wrote with compassion......telling it like it is. and always wanting to help. Thru his posts you could share a laugh and feel his fustration when something was not right.

Although we never met, the shock felt when hearing the news and the lump in my throat are real. I will miss you Paul, we all will.

From my family to Pauls', our Thoughts and Prayers are with you

Rest in peace. I keep him in mind as an authoritarian luminary on his field.
Paul and I corresponded many times mostly about DataBase Publisher and Ventura. However, Paul also loved Trains. Well, you don't need to say much more to get me going about my own love for all things to do with the railroad - especially the Canadian railroad.

Back in 2007 when Linda and I were preparing to move to Ireland, Paul told me that he was nearing completion of a DVD from 8mm film, of trains from 1959 - 1962. In fact, here's a quote from his email (any who know me, know that I never delete email):

"54 minutes of steam, diesel, oil electric cars in Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick (4-4-0s) and Nova Scotia."

Paul was retired then ... or as he puts it, "so-called retired". Evidently, Paul kept busy working on projects that were meaningful to him, and that gave him enjoyment.

He must've been really close to Bill Gates too ... cuz you'd often hear Paul refer to him as no one else would, "Willy Gates". They must've been childhood friends, do you think? ha ha

I'm happy to have worked on a few projects with Paul - even simply as an extra set of eyes to work out a particularly difficult database publishing problem (he was always good at finding the most challenging scenario)

Isn't it odd to have come to know someone well enough that you feel an attachment, and yet, perhaps having never met in person. Well, odd maybe ... but fulfilling.

To his family who may be reading these comments, perhaps most of whom had no idea of just how many lives Paul has touched, just in his dealings with these mysterious online communities: Our hearts go out to you for your loss.

Life is a journey - a train journey! For most of it we are in the dining and observation cars, taking the views and enjoying the experience. Inevitably we need to retire to the sleeping car. And there we wait until we arrive at the destination.

I enjoying his wacky humor along the way, but ultimately learned many useful & practical things that laid a strong foundation for what was to come in my own Corel-related endeavors.

One of the lines in the introduction to that book was: "If you're not having fun with Photo-Paint, you're probably doing something wrong."

I believe in that 100%. A good reminder to "play" in Photo-Paint and see what happens.

The Titan & Guru that David was should inspire all of us to reach high standards of productivity and effectiveness with our own lives. He'd certainly done that with his. David's accomplishments are both remarkable and irrefutable.
