Hello all,

I am new to CD11, but I know my way around CD. I have searched online and looked at few CD tutorials but I can not find these answers, or might be that it is too 'beginnerish,' it just hasn't been asked...  I now need help on creating more advanced shapes or advanced usage of CD11.

1. Ok, I need you to imagine a little...

I have multiple lines and curves. Lets say I have 5 of them, just randomly put together in a shape that I wish to have. (So pretend it looks like a blob for now). And to make this blob, the nodes of each line/curve are not placed ontop of each other (not each node against the next of that particular line/curve), so basically, all lines/curves overlap/interesect each other to create the blob.

I want to make this blob into a "shape" so I can fill the inside. How do I do this? I have tried combine, weld, and such, but it is not working. I have tried the 4 "automatically close path to _____" things, but those do not give me the result I wish to have. I also did the change/reverse end point thing, but that didn't work either.

Thing I don't want to do, which was in another tutorial, is to add a node on a line/curve's intersection point, delete the part I don't want, do the same thing for the next line, and connect/join those two new endpoints, and keep repeating this for all node/lines/curves until one shape is made. The problem is that I guess coreldraw doesn't recognize where two lines meets, and it doesn't allow me to snap my mouse cursor to there. IF it does, this method will be perfect for me, but sadly no... I do have snap feature activated while doing this. I am looking for a so called technical/engineering drawing type way as this is required for me for work.

2a. Rounding angles: I have this shape --- take 2 ovals, which 1st is vertical and 2nd is horizontal, align both in the center, and do the trim action. The end piece I get is a square like oval shape that is created in the center after I delete the outside parts. I want to round the angle on this shape... possible?

One tutorial told me to create 2 nodes, each node on each side of where the lines meets (the corner point), and delete the original corner node, giving it a rounded corner in the end. This works, but like question 1, I need a more accurate way to round angles, with same measurement on all the corners rather than guestimation (guess/estimation).

2b. Is it possible to do the rounding angle on other different shapes? If so, how? It seems to not work like that rectangle one where I just click and drag the corner to round corners.... am I doing it wrong?

2c. General question: does it have a round all angle feature I'm not aware of? I saw a post with an add-on that does this. but I can't install this on the company computer.  Also, Can ANY shape I make in CD have angles rounded? I know on Illustrator, it didn't allow ALL when the angle between the two line was too small of an accute angle.

3. I do symmetric and non-symmetric works, but I have problems when it comes to non-symmetric one. Symmetric, I can mirror some design I create, and do automatic connection/joining  to make a shape. On non-symmetric. I do the same thing with mirroring, but on both vertical and horizontal, and try to connect them together, but it doesn't work. This works ok if few lines are there, but it comes in problem when multiple lines comes in play like question 1. Any advice? Am I doing this wrongly?

4. "Smart Fill" tool for non-smart fill versions. I know Version 12 and up have this "smart fill" option, which is a great tool. Sadly version 11 does not have this feature. Is there a better way to do this "smart fill" action then the one I describe below?

I haven't done this, but this would be my guess. Wherever I want a "smart fill" type action, I would most likely have to gather all the shapes around that place, do a huge one time trimming with the main figure I want as "sent to back", and after the trim is done, I have that shape to mess around with. As an example, I have a cartooned face drawing with hair. Right below the hair, I want a shadow. I would probably need to take the hair shape, face shape, maybe few parts of the eyebrow and eyes,; and then trim. after the trim, I would need to delete the other parts that is left, which will be the area below the eyes. Fill that clor to a shadowy color, and done.

Is there another way or something more easy/cleaver that would help to do these things?

Thank you tons in advance. I am at a high paced job palce so I had to come here to seek for some answers.

1. Ok, I need you to imagine a little...

Redraw using a continue line using what you have draw as a guide.

xitdude:
2c. General question: does it have a round all angle feature I'm not aware of?

You have them in rectangles. See its Property Bar. You could press F10 and move corner nodes.

I have to see the specifc shape that you want to create. Probably, you can solve the problem redrawing using what you have as a guide.

If you're sticking with that old of a copy of Draw, then you need to rethink
your design workflow. Draw wants all "objects" to be closed-curve objects.
I.e., a square is an actual square shape using the rectangle tool... or
using one of the line tools to create a continuous line that will come back
and "rejoin" itself on that last node. Taking a bunch of lines and arranging
them on the page will functionally just give you a bunch of lines on the
page even though visually you can "imagine" them as some other shape.

If you don't want to design this way, then you need to upgrade to X3 or X4
(current model) and use the Smart Fill features they have in the later
versions.

Yes. As mentioned, upgrade to a current version or you will need to change
the way you're wanting to create these objects. That's about all anyone can
suggest unless you show us what you're really wanting to do.

Here's another possibilty that has worked for me for many versions.

1. Convert your shapes and lines to high resolution bitmap. If you are working with black and white, convert it to 600 dpi or higher black and white image.

2. Now edit the bitmap. First convert to color  so you can add color where needed.

3. Use masks and the color fill bucket to enter solid colors. Save

4. Trace the bitmap. Now you have vector shapes that you can combine, fill, edit, crop, weld, etc.

ah, thanks all. sorry for the alte reply too.

so I guess if I want any angle to be rounded, I need to use the rectangle tool and round thigns first, and add nodes here and there to make more advanced shapes? (of course with trimming, welding, and other options). I think Micael and Hunter's reply kind of answers this question on how i need to rethink the design flow. If corel see's things in "objects", then it becomes apparent in what I might be doing wrong.

bitmap idea sounds good too. I'll have to play around with this and get used to it as I do projects.

thanks again. I'll also try to upload some works later on to let you know what i want to do with some things.

As mentioned before, you might upgrade to the latest version which does have
a smart fill tool. It kind of boils it down to the question of which is
easier/faster to do: purchase the upgrade and continue with your current
workflow, or keep with the older version and change your workflow. It may be
"cheaper" (in terms of time/effort) do keep working as you are with a newer
version that would let you work that way.

Hello HUnter,

I hope to upgrade, but I forgot to write something in the previous reply.

The company I work for owns version 11 and are not willing to upgrade, so i have to do with what is given to me. I have X4 at home, which is way easier and I agree with you on that for sure. The reason they don't want ot upgrade is becasue they probably think we designers can still do the job with 11... and plus, geting a new license for the company and what not, just a lot of money foor them.

Things just doesn't go to my wish lol.

Maybe you need to scratch the disks and tell them they have no choice. ;)

until you found a hammer (for Yani's suggestion) you must remember some simple rules:

- all objects must me closed

- you must combine two or more objects for convert to "one object"

- you must convert to curves a rectangle or ellipse for add nodes or modify

For example, you can round angles of a rectangle using the Shape Tool (F10), but if you want to add nodes or deform, you must convert to curves and select nodes with the shape tool.

If you want a simmetric object, you can do the half, then mirror the object. (A fast way for create a mirrored copy is to select the central lef handle, and move to the right side while pressing the Ctrl key. If you press the secondary mouse button before release the primary mouse button, you will create a copy)But you will have two objects, not one. Then, you must select both and Combine (Ctrl+L). Now you have a combined object, but "open", and you must select nodes and "close" the shape, by joining nodes. The result will be one clodes object

... and about this... "Smart Fill" is not the answer, if I understand correctly what you want.

With CorelDRAW X4 you can create a boundary around the selected objects, and easily apply a fill, but with older versions, you must create a duplicate and weld all shapes, and if you need you can combine or trim it.

I can certainly understand that, but really? They won't upgrade? The upgrade
is NOT expensive - especially compared to buying things outright. Perhaps a
demonstration is required for them? In other words, go download the X4 demo
and play with it a bit so you know what you can do to speed up your
workflow. Then sit the Powers That Be down with you and show them how long
it takes you to do some tedious bit of work in v11 (be sure to time it - and
practice before showing them first LOL) and then show them how long (or
hopefully "how short") the time is to do a similar function in X4. Perhaps
showing them how the speeding up of your workflow could increase production
and help decrease the bottom line of production time/hours/costs could force
them to get the upgrade?

Thank you Ariel for theose suggestions. After reading it, I found my answer right away. Seems like I need to combine things before i close nodes or else, it won't work. Thanks for the turotial as well. I'll keep it in mind as I design things. As for #4 answer, thanks for that too.

For the upgrade, yea, will see what happens with this. I just started to work here so it's not good if I start saying things. But with time, I'll see my position to talk about this too. :)

thanks to everyone once again.
