how do you choose different colors for an imported eps file?

Some background first.  I open corel draw x3, choose new, import an eps file that is already all black.  It asks question Text or Curve. I chose text because all I needed to do was change the color from black to green.  The picture is a scroll design which will have text underneath (words from a song).  Then I export it as a jpg.  Open the file up with my tile mural software and print it from there.  Take the print out and heat it to a 4" tile.

Question:  The customer would like different colors in different parts of the picture.  Should I be using text or curve when importing the eps file. 

Any help will be much appreciated.

Shouldn't make any difference whatever, as long as you have that font installed, but I would go for text. Text and be filled exactly the same way as curves, so there may be little difference in handling. But when converted from text to curves there may be a slight loss of quality or even a very small change in spacing.

Being an EPS you may find that the text may be individual letters or groups of letters, rather than a complete line; curves would probably be all individual "letters" and you could have problems with curve "direction" causing some fills to drop out or even invert. The exact way they arrive would be a function of the program that prepared the EPS.

Is it really necessary to export as a JPEG? If that is to be mural size, it would need a very high resolution JPEG with minimal compression. In experimenting with JPEGs and text a few years ago, text came became totally illegible in many of the variations I tried.

Thank you Paul for the response. I will give it a try. This project in particular is going to be a single 4" tile (30 of them). Unfortunately my mural software will only accept a jpg, tiff or bitmap.  The goal is to eventually learn more about corel draw and use it for our mural software and to get away from what we use now.    I am playing around with the interactive fill tool right now.  Very cool but not getting it to work the way I need it to yet. I will keep trying.

Can we insert picture into our posts/replies here?

There's no difference with color if you import as text or as curves. The problem is whe you export as JPG, if you choose RGB the colors will change, the best option is to export as TIF or JPG on CMYK mode, and choose "apply color profile"
