How do I create partial black and white photos in Corel 12... New to the program!
You can play with Clip Masks for the most flexibility, but I usually just do this;
1. Duplicate the background to a new object, Ctrl+D.
2. Desaturate that new object.
3. Erase through the top object, revealing the original colored background below.

Duplicate Background. Ctrl-D
Create a Desaturate Lens. Object/Create/New Lens. Select desaturate from the list.
Activate duplicated object/layer. Click on object docker
Activate Channel Mixer. Adjust/Channel Mixer. Mix channel until you obtain a good grayscale image.
Combine lens object/layer with duplicated object layer. Select both of them with the Shift key holded, and Ctrl-Alt-Down Arrow, or Menu/Object/Combine/Combine Objects Together.
Create a Clip Mask. Object Docker right click object and select Clip Mask/Show All or Menu/Object/ClipMask/Create/To Show All.
Activate Airbrush and paint away the areas you want to discard, or restore changing from black to white the brush color.
Combine Clip Mask when satisfied.

WOW that was EASY!! Thanks Jeff. I'm gonna have some fun now!
May I put my 3c of artistic sense in here? Please?
This selective coloring technique is one of the most overused image manipulations ever done, at one time there where so many of this images that people literally got fed up with it. So be careful where you use that image because your audience might be willing to lynch you :) I belong to several critique sites and if someone posts an image with selective coloring they never get a favorable response.

Oh I am sure you are right. I am a mother of two and just use this program now for home use. I used to design t-shirts out of high school and now have moved on to ultrasound... My friends and family will enjoy it. I found that image on the net. I should of gave credit..oops. Thanks for your response though!
In fairness, is there an image effect that has not been over done? I have seen many effects come and go in and out of vogue over the years. Some disappear only to reemerge years later. Some never come back. Remember Grundge Letters? Drop Shadows? Gradient Transparencies? They were all done-done to death-disappeared and reemerged in more restrained and tasteful usage.
Graphics effects are like movies. If I had listened to the critics, I would have seen a heck of a lot of movies I would have hated and missed a heck of a lot of movies that I loved.
Audience is key. Many people, some of them paying people, will be wowed by a red fire engine on a black and white picture. Some will ask specifically for it. You have to know how to do it if it is what the client wants.
I would be interested in dropping by these critique sites and seeing what is 'in'. Alfred can you send me a link?

Hi Lori, Glad you liked it. I try to make CorelDRAW and PP easy when possible. :-)Now that you know this technique, you can use it in many different ways. For ex... effect the top object in a different way instead of desaturating:effects | contour | edge detectThen erase through to the original below with a soft edged nib. There are a zillion effects...JD
HI Rikk,
Sometimes people love to complain. The irony is that when you ask to see THEIR portfolio, they freeze and get very quiet.Ya wanna see frighteningly bad graphics? Sit in my chair for a week and see what comes in from clients... Ha ha...
You want to see some extremely frightening graphics? Look at my older stuff!

It's been a while since I've done this and i'm trying to do it again and it's not working? I duplicated it. When to paint tool. Selected saturation. What and when I click on the image nothing is happening. What do I change the transparency to? errr I don't use this program much at all.
Thanks!!
I desaturated an image of my son and want to enhance the area I erased..his eyes. I want to put a brighter blue in them. How do I do this?
Thanks
