Today I tried to open a file that I created recently in X4 and it will not open. Arrrggghhh.
I tried opening some other .cdr files and it appears that anything I've created since about June 19, 2009 will not open. The error message when I click on Open looks like this:
Looking at the problem .cdr files in Windows Explorer they have no preview like the older .cdr files that are okay. Also no preview or file information in the Open dialog box either.
So...there are eight files total I cannot open. Two of them I need a.s.a.p., the other six are no loss. I have attached one of problem files (the one I need the most) to see if anyone can figure out what's going on.
I have already used F8 to reset CD. Files saved from that point on are okay, but I still cannot open the problem files. I have NO CLUE what might have corrupted them. Here's the weird thing. Before I used F8, I could open them from the File menu recent file list, but now that I have reset to defaults they are of course gone from the list.
I'm a long-time Corel user and I have never encountered this before, so any help would be most appreciated!

Did you try to remove and reinstall the font. I've had fonts go bad before and that seemed to solve the issue.

I thought about fonts, but only one of the problem files has text in it and it's just plain ol' Arial. I don't think it's the font -- wouldn't that affect all .cdr files with Arial font in them? I use Arial as the default font in CD. Were you able to open the file I attached in my original post?
It opened OK here I saved it as a corel 9 file see if you can open it.
Thanks Ronald -- that worked! I wonder why I can't open the file here? Out of curiosity I think I'll try downloading my original I posted and see if it works.
Meanwhile, I've attached the second file I need. If you or someone else has the time to save it back to version 9 I would be most appreciative.
I did the same thing here and saved it in 9 format. It worked the first time. Let me know what was wrong if you find out.
Double thanks, Ron!
I did try downloading the original file I posted, but I still could not open it. I am scratching my head trying to figure out what I was doing on July 19 in CD that might cause this. And why were you able to open it and not me??? The only thing I can think of was I was working on a 2-color newsletter and had changed some settings in Color Management. I thought I returned to my usual settings after that, but I really can't remember.
If you look at the document properties in the original file, tell me if you see anything funky with colors or anything else. Since I can't open the file, I can't investigate...but I would like to prevent it from happening again!
It looks like you were using standard CMYK & RGB Nothing about color management. Were you working on any other files that day and do they open? Are the files today opening up OK? Have you checked for a Virus?
I have saved the file as a CMX file. The only time I have seen the message you got is when I accidently had the text tool selected and tried importing a cdr or some bitmapped file. So just make sure you have your Pick Tool selected.

I was able to open the file also, but I did note that there is not a thumbnail showing for the file. Taking a hint from Paul, I changed your font to Times New Roman. and resaved it. Thumbnail apprears. I am attaching the new file. Paul may be on to something. Maybe you can open it.

Antivirus up to date, last scan was at noon today. It found one cookie and deleted it. :)
I was not trying to import the files, I was opening them via the Open dialog. Nothing unusual about that.
Since some of the files that would not open do not contain any text, I surmise that the problem is not font related. If there were a problem with my Arial font itself, surely that would show problems in other software as well?
One thing I have not done today is reboot my computer or clear my temp files. I had to get some things done first, so now I'll try that and see if it clears things up.
good luck Patti. If you still have issues Id be happy to look at some files for you.
just by chance do you have X3 and X4 installed?

Rebooting and clearing temp files did not help. However....I did find a solution for opening the files. I had CDX4 open and via Windows Explorer I right-clicked and chose to open one of the corrupt files with CorelDraw 9. The file opened in the X4 window. I resaved and now the file is fine. I am scratching my head on this one, as I did not expect that to work! I wonder if I accidentally changed something in my save dialog back around June 19...but there's no way to know now and I ain't gonna experiment with it no more --ha!
I was able to open the remaining problem files this way and have resaved them all and they all have previews and open just fine.
Thanks to everyone for your help!
And yes, I still have version 9 on my computer. I have this one macro from Isocalc that only works in version 9. I do not have any other versions.
