What method do I use to import a jpeg or bitmap image and convert to an "outline" only image/template.  I want to take a jpeg or bitmap  image and make  and outline to print and cut around the outline to create a template to use when plasma cutting metal art.

The quickest way I know is to take the image -- BMAP works best; click trace bitmap and choose quick trace; ungroup the image (Ctrl+U); select the outer edge -- in this case I click his "hair"); use 'no fill' and black outline:

The quickest way to get a quality trace is to do it manually. Yes, you can use PowerTrace but the quality it provides is sorely lacking and will need a lot of manual cleanup. Thus the reason why it is QUICKER to do it manually from the start.
 
This is a subject I cover extensively in my book (see link in signature) or you can get a tutorial on just this subject.

This is a very important concept that you need to master.

Hello:

I have the same problem that Jerry. I want to cut a picture for its edge with a laser cutter. Sorry but, could you explain me step by step what I should do? At the end of the day I want to get an outline to be save in *.plt, but I dont know how to reach that point. Thank in advance.
