I am having problems with Corel PhotoPaint for X4. I've used CorelDraw since mid 90s. Today I got a new computer, new monitor adn I newly downloaded upgrade to CorelDraw x4 from CorelDraw 12 and I am operating in Windows 7.

When I open CorelDraw x4 color palette looks normal and photos imported into CorelDraw look great. However, CorelPhoto Paint x4 colors look muted and all photos look grainier than they should. I've gone in and turned color manager on and off and for professional output, etc. Alternating between those does make the palette appear much brighter or dimmer respectively, but still not nearly the vibrancy or accuracy of colors or even the shades that appear in CorelDraw x4. I've even opened the same photos in other programs to see if it was a photo image issue, but all other programs on the computer open the images fine and the images look nice and are clear as a bell there.

Again, this is a new computer, new monitor and newly downloaded upgrade to CorelDraw x4 from CorelDraw 12 with new Windows7, but again, other programs look fine including CorelDraw x4. So do you have any ideas what might be wrong with my PhotoPaint program?

first, ensure your video card is sending exactly the correct pixel dimensions your monitor is expecting, something like 1920 x 1080...

your monitor should tell you what resolution it expects, this is this specific monitor's "native resolution".

if that matches what your video card is putting out, this is what you need.

  1. open image in Photo paint.
  2. press CTRL+1 . image should be perfectly clear at that zoom level. well there is no zoom. 1 pixel in your file is 1 pixel on your screen.
  3. zoom in and out. if image looks barfy at other zoom levels, this could be a by product of LCD's. It why I look at a CRT instead.

I think you are right.... should probably look at CRT, but was surprised with this new monitor as an early Valentine's Day present.

Where I am seeing a BIG issue is in the color palettes on CorelDraw X4 and Corel PhotoPaint X4. The colors are incredibly dull and muted. Could that truly be my monitor instead of an issue with Corel compatibility with Windows7 like I was earlier thinking. This one has me really confused. I noticed this before the issue with pictures.

if the palettes themselves look different, and PP is dull, consider turning color management OFF in PP to check the difference.

Hi GG,

there is certainly no compatibility issue with CorelDraw/PhotoPaint and Windows 7; I have been running X4 on Windows 7 for over a year going back to the beta versions. What you are describing does sound very odd though, as when you make a setting in CM it affects both Draw and PP. Do you set up CM manually and use a monitor profile? If so, have you set up Windows 7 CM and used the same monitor profile there as well?
