I'll describe a few basics here and you have to forgive me if it sounds like I think you're not knowing what you are doing. It's just that your problems are so incredibly odd, that I have to make sure there's no basic procedure you've missed.
You know how to set the default colors for new objects, don't you?Without anything selected, click on any color palette swatch (or the No Color swatch) and confirm in the dialog that pops up. Same thing for outline but you right-click instead. After doing this, the chosen colors will be the default for all new objects (not for text though)
To give color to an object, either select the object and click on a color swatch. Alternatively you may drag a color swatch to the object (don't have to select it first then). There's no such thing as a fill tool (actually there is as Jeff mentioned, but there's no reason to use it for uniform fills), and from your description in a previous post it sounded like you were using the Smart Fill tool.
You mentioned the Graph Paper tool. Does the tooltip say "Graph Paper tool" when you hover over the icon? Reason I ask is because the new Table tool was added to the toolbox for X4 and the icon looks similar, which has confused some users. Not that I think it would make a difference which one you're using when it comes to colors, but anyway.
LittleGreenDots:I define a rectangle, fill it with black, and it only fills with a mid gray, but if I do it again, it is black.
Regarding the font, or symbol font, problem I have no idea.

Hi Little green dots.'
Check this new section out.I asked and got created from Corel a new section : Design & illustration critique http://coreldraw.com/forums/550.aspxPlace something there and at least I will promiss to respond in a professional manner.

Thanks. I will...after I get this memory checking procedure completed. I have my files backed up and I'm ready to go. I had to find a spot in my work flow where I could stop and that time is now. As soon as I verify the status of my RAM, I'll look to post my flier in this new forum.
I don't know how to make ISO disks. And I really don't have the time to learn all this new stuff. And all of this is eating up so much of my time. My Coreldraw problems are getting worse. The fill tool that was working okay before now fills everything with a dark blue-gray color. There is something seriously wrong with this program. I contacted Dell and ran a complete diagnostic program included as a utility on a separate desk, not a test from within Windows, including a separate thorough memory test, and everything passed. If I was having problems with even one other program, I'd dig deeper into my hardware. But everything seems to be working fine...until I open CorelDraw. I do a lot of photo editing (Corel Paint Shop Pro), music notation, sound programs (one that slows down music files), all of MS Office 2007 programs including a web page design program called Web Expression, and others. Surely one of these programs would tax my computer and cause problems, too. But none do. Everything on my computer works fine except for CD X4.
I've contacted CorelDraw and that didn't go anywhere.
What I need to know is this:
1) Is there even a remote possibility CD X4 has compatibility issues with processing chips or other computing mechanisms?
2) Can an installation DVD be corrupt? If so, how can I test it?
3) Could insufficient RAM cause this problem? I only have one gig in right now, but when I use CD X4, it is the only program I have open.
I'm desperately trying to get some work done here and unfortunately for me, graphics is a key element. Can someone please answer my three questions?
Unless you do hardware checks first you have no way of knowing if a base issue isn't at the root of the problem.
I provided a link to making ISO files. It's not hard.

Sorry to hear you can't get your problems solved.
One thing that I don't understand is that you keep complaining about the fill tool not working alright, and I've asked a couple of times but you don't tell me what tool you're talking about. There is no fill tool really and your description of what happens makes me think you use the Smart Fill tool. Please try again and explain in detail. There must be a simple solution to this one.
It's too early to say for sure, but after a preliminary run through CD X4, I think I may have found the problem.
Last summer my computer was going bonkers. After many frustrating hours of trying to resolve the issues (just like I had recently with these CD X4 stability problems!) Dell decided to replace my processing chip. That fixed the problem immediately, whatever it was.
The technician came to my house and installed it and left in minutes. However, he failed to restore my BIOS to default and then update it, or tell me I should do that. Yesterday I added more RAM and my computer couldn't accept it (4 GB total) and I contacted Dell and they told me to update my BIOS. That solved the problem. The increased RAM took and CD X4 looks okay. I'll know better when I get in and try some real tasks, though.
Thanks. Sorry about all this confusion. You can't imagine what I've been going through, with no place to turn. I had contacted Dell earlier they will not address issues like the problems I was having with CD X4. It looks like it was a computer problem all along. It wasn't until I was unable to install more RAM that an issue became apparent.
Glad to hear you seem to have found the cause. Please let us know how it works after a while. And don't forget to send Dell a bill for all your trouble.
Yes, I have all service packs and patches on both Windows and CD. CD12 had some issues on my Vista laptop, which is why I bought X4 in the first place.
BTW, I used the wrong term, fill tool. It is the interactive fill tool that I was having trouble with (among other things.)
As I reported above, my BIOS update looks to have taken care of my problem here. However, stay tuned. I really haven't jumped into any projects yet.
