Hello All
I just bought corel x5 and I was very dissapointed with the "new" things. The only thing they changed is the 4 to 5. oh yea and the pretty splash.. I miss carlos.
The only thing I like is the Document Palette, that helps a lot.. but other than that its the same thing.
I use Pantone Coated colors and in corel X4 I used to Shift+click on the pantone palette to search certain color. X5 opens the search box but when I enter and click ok it just won't do anything. is there a solution for that?
Also theres no option to increase the scratch memory..
I would say that your brother is wrong. Give X5 a try... work with it and you'll eventually see the new and improved features.
Color Management, the B-Spline Tool (A favourite of mine), mesh Transparency, better Power trace, improved Transformation docker, the Macro manager... too many to name.

That setting that was in earlier versions did nothing. Memory is automatically managed by your operating system. X5 now has the ability to use multicore processors and makes printing, saving and bitmap effects faster.
Just give X5 a chance and you'll see the beauty of such a wonderful product.
BTW... Photo-paint has tons of new improvements and features.

Cool Adrian, thank you.. how about the Pantone color Finder? why it doesnt work?
The Pantone 'finder' is on a list.
You better tell ya brother to get some glasses. And it's not just what you can see it's what you can't where most of the real work is. It's all been listed in other threads.
That is a shocking thing to say in view of the developers that have put 2 years into this and so totally untrue.

Your brother may be your brother, but he havent given X5 a test.Such statement is provocative, but sorry cant be taken seriously.

Well I apologize If I hit a nerve, I've been buying corel since version 2.0 and i just paid $200 more so Im entitled to give my opinion. I also think that after 2 years they should ve done better. All the NEW stuff can be done in corel x4. I was expecting more from corel. I use Illustrator as well and their upgrade to cs4 was a lot better. Im not comparing corel to illusttrator because I dont want to get some more hate replies. Corel is great, its awesome and I make a lot of money out of it.. I buy the upgrades when available without reading the "new stuff" because I know I'll get my money back in the next 2 hours.. im just saying im very dissaponted. and my brother was right. If that bothers you, well, Im sorry. that is JUST me, my opinion.. many other people maybe are amazed with the updates, not me.. they messed up my pantone search. and NO i dont want to go thru the drop down menu.

The b-spline tool, import filters for PDF, DOC, AI, and Publisher files, along with the merge to PDF/new document (I'm upgrading from x3) made it worth my $200 x 2 (two workstations) Not to mention a zillion little fixes.
As I said, I work with Illustrator and Corel, so that gives me the best of both worlds.. and yes if you break the nodes in a mesh fill you can add transparency.
Yes you can import Compressed Illustrator Files. If you open them in illustrator, save them in version7 and import in corel. you can do not only eps, but ai.
I dont use photopaint.. never used it never opened it never needed it, so I wont coment on photo paint. I use photoshop and corel painter.
I used Photozoom but I didnt like it. try Alien Blow up fliter in photoshop and then you'll be amazed...
For tracing Corel was doing better than streemline until they did Live trace in Illustrator.. and it just traces like a charm.. I thought they were going to improve the Auto trace but nothing...
Im sorry if my comment offended you, but I dont just sit around and wait until they decide to improve the tools.. I make the programs do what I want..
The B-spline tool its just the pen tool with a wheelchair.
...the only thing you have to do to import, ai, eps, doc, word, publisher or any format is buy adobe Acrobat and print pdfs, and import...
but Mike, if you're upgrading from x3 then you'll be amazed..pretty cool stuff from 3 to 5... they shouldve called the new version 4.5.
AGAIN, this is just my opinion... I respect yours so let me just say what I think.
edwundram:Also theres no option to increase the scratch memory..
No longer needed.

If there is one thing that isn't under a NFDA it's that people here are way aware of how much work went into this. Equally we were aware that because so much of that was deep code and didn't add buttons there would be exactly this reaction from someone being a jerk. It craps us off because the one thing that makes a difference to the next version is sales of this version. And it takes a huge amount of energy to deal with this misrepresentation of facts.
No one who did a Webinar came out with that perception. If anything there is 4 times the code and other effort in this release. Plus the extras that are packaged with it.
Any time there is a comparison of Corel with Adobe it needs to be understood the size difference between the 2. Adobe sacked 6 times Corel's total workforce last year.
You really have to be a bit fair here.
Well Mate, if you're happy with this version then Im glad for you, Im not happy with it and you going to call me a Jerk? should I like just because you like it ? I hope you understand that I BOUGHT THE UPGRADE, and I LOVE COREL, i've been using it since version 2 and its got more functions and tools than ILLUSTRATOR and Freehand(when was available) together. I understand how powerful is Corel and I never said it wasnt it.. I own 12 upgrades so dont tell me I dont understand the codes and extras. Im not comparing Corel with illustrator. they're both good and i think Corel is a lot better than illustrator. (except for auto trace) but let me put it in ways you would understand " from all the Corel upgrades, I was expecting more from this one" So just because you're happy with the new splash window dont insult my intelligence. Im not here to fight but go express my opinion. I think corel is the best program out there, and I tell you that because I own illustrator, freehand and corel not because I attended a seminar about it. I talk out of my experience not of what I read on the newspapers..
You really have to be a bit fair here..
edwundram: The only thing they changed is the 4 to 5. oh yea and the pretty splash.. I miss carlos.
I respect your opinion.
The splash could have been better like 8,9 13, etc...
Something cool, like a skull in the balloon and only grayscale, or anything a little more creative. There were a lot of cool suggestions here before X5 came out.
I love CorelDRAW too but gave up on PowerTrace. I find X5 PowerTrace still lagging a little behind. I use Vector Magic and it's unbelievable! (Yes... expensive, but you gotta pay if you wanna play...lol)
My favorite part of Corel is the automation using VBA. I saw an html of what was added/removed from the object model and it gives me a clear view of the amount of work put into the upgrade.
I can see this release will definitely not be exempt from a big service pack update either.
Since everyone's throwin' opinions around....

Hello John..finally a happy face in the crowd.. thank you for your comment. and I agree with you on the PowerTrace. I used Vector magic when it was free and part of that university project. I was amazed how cool it was. and all the cool options that came with it. I wish Corel can do better on the next update.
You're right on the Automation using Visual Basic.... you got a point there..
