OK, I am new here, but have been using Corel Draw since 1996 or so.  To "open" an .AI file, you have to use the IMPORT function.  Then select the .eps, .ai interpolated filter.  That works on ever .ai file that I have ever used.  Hope this helps.

Hi, CoolBlueC6, glad to know you. You are right, this is the old and clasical way to import AI files. But, since many versions you can "Open" Illustrator files instead of import. Also, you can "open" PDF or postscript files, as a new CDR file.  But Illustrator change the internal AI code from CS version.
and now is better import as a PDF. If you select An illustrator version CS or CS2, you can import or open selecting the PDF format.

Hi guys.  I'm new here and not sure how any of this works.  I have Corel, but not Illustrator and need to open an AI file.  Tried photoshop and coverting to eps, but then it's not a vector image rather an image.  What is an "eps, .ai interpolated filter"?  I appreciate all the help you can give me :)

If you have the latest version of CorelDRAW X4, then you will be able to open Ai-illustrator files directly. No direct need to go via Photoshop and EPS.
You should, be able to open all Ai illustrator files up to CS3. ( if you havent done any fancy pantsy stuff with your illustrator file).

And you can save to Ai files created in CorelDRAW.
When sending files back and forth to Illustrator & CorelDRAW, try using file formats PDFand Ai.

EPS is a file that was not intended to be editable in the beginning.
EPS can entail both Vectors and Bitmaps.
EPS is also in my opinion a to widely used term by people not really knowing what it is.  And is demanded by the same people, not accepting a PDF to be better suited for them. "just because" they only know about EPS as a file format.

EPS can be saved from CorelDRAW as well as from Illustrator. Do bare in mind that EPS is "made" differently depending mostly because the differens on how CorelDRAW and Adobe Illustrator make transparancies. Which is making most of the hazzle.
Just look for subjects about EPS in this forum, take this thread >

Draw X4 is pretty good at reading Illustrator files. Just remember that if they are compressed upon save in Illustrator, Draw won't be able to read them. There may also be problems with files created in Illy CS4, due to the fact that CS4 came out after X4, and hence the filter is not created for the CS4 format.

Fixing illustrator files use recover ai file. The program works under Windows 98 and higher. The utility restores .ai files after hdd failures, hacker attacks, malicious software. The tool uses contemporary ways of repairing illustrator info.
