 Hi

I was just wondering, if any body uses Object data manager. I have tried using it. But very less.

IMO, this data can be used externally for invoicing (Job billing) purpose. Your opinions please.

Does any body use it for job tracking or any other purpose ?

Regards

OD seem to crash X4 sometimes, so for internal storage of object tags I use shape.properties, though it's quite a different kind of a beast (not editable in UI)

Yeah. Not editable in UI. Apart from trying it to use it externally, I tried figuring out the ways to use it. I haven't yet found any. But feel if reworked, can be useful for maintaining customised data related to jobwork, clients, job tracking, invoicing etc.

Hi Anand,

From what Foster told me, this feature was added specifically for one major customer's need's many years ago. Maybe in Version 3?

I've never been real clear what the Object Data Mgr served either. What could be a real asset is a section like the "from New Template" that would maintain client and project specs linked to that design. In an another post I suggested as a make-shift approach you can add a layer to keep info on and then make it non-printable/invisible, but it would be nice to actually have more of a form that would insert some of the information from the design into categories - ideally customizable.

A little early for April Fools Jeff... better be careful or they'll make you start hocking butter commercials!

Apart from having half the default fields in German, I can only really see this of any use if it was part of the "Symbols"/"Symbol manager"... unless you could link fields to a specific object property (like width, height, position on page, in a group, fill, outline, number of nodes, special shape type, length, enclosing area, page it's on... etc) then you have a quick and easy customisable 'properties' page that you can see at a glance the information you want.

A method to sort/filter on these fields would be one of the major things I think is missing. Exporting the data to a XLS or even CSV would be nice as well. (instead of the "open spreadsheet" option)

 Hi Jeff

I also have observed this feature exist for a long. However, I did not use it till I was introduced to Macros. I tried to find out ways using / pulling the data for using it in macros. But as Os says, its a different kind of beast & uneditable in UI.

Now the question arises, why does it exist for so long if it is not used to that extent. If I remember, there was a discussion on Beta site about the elimination  of  OCR from Trace, CorelScan, RAVE etc. due to non or less usage (or usefulness). If that is the case, what is OD manage doing here in X4 ?

It can be of great use if this is made free to use in UI.

 Hi Anand

We use the ODM quite a lot in our cemetery mapping services for registering interment data. The ODM has become a major tool and makes looking up information on a burial site easy. We just click on a lot number or the name of the interred and all related data on that burial site or person pops up. Before discovering the ODM, we would use and link an Excel files to the maps. We also use the ODM for recording details for cemetery virtual tours and videos...it's a grate tool...TOPOGRAPHIX.COM

Hi Topographix

Its a total new kind of application usage of CorelDRAW for me. Are you able to use the data out side CorelDRAW? May be in a database application?

Hi,

we also use ODM quite often. Especially when doing some bigger jobs, lots of pages etc. Easier to track changes, mistakes, preparation for pages, guidelines, non printable objects...

I think that using ODM is just something of a habit - if you used to it, than its great. Otherwise it can be quite confusing. But definitely worth to learn working with it...

hi

when the document or a object is saved/exported, if it goes with the data name, not only file name, I may use allways ODM to fredefine the file name, object name, or something for object poroperti.

thank you.

I use a non printable layer to keep note of all such things.

I would love to use it if I was able to fetch the ODM Data in my external applications (Out of CorelDRAW). Are you able to do it ?

There does not seem to be a way to export data from any version of Corel up to X4. Maybe X5 has a way.

On a different subject - has anybody notice the difference in the color palettes from X3 to X4 and whether or not they fix that issue in X5.  If you put up a CMYK or RGB (any color palette) from both versions side by side you will note that X4 has a hazy or a dull look to the colors wile and X3 is bright and clear.  I thought it might have been my computer but did the comparison on two different  computers. I did send a JEPG image of the two together to Corel but received no reply.

Robert,

The difference isn't the color palettes, it is the color management settings you are using. If you use the same settings in X3 and X4, they will match. Things have changed in X5 and hopefully problems like this won't come up.
