Gadget:

Can you paint on the image with a normal paintbrush and add lines/shapes?

Can you apply some of the effects to see if they work? 

 

The paintbrush option isn't even working on the images....but I CAN use the blending tool, though....

 Very weird

If you create a new document, rather than opening an existing, do you get the same problems?  If you do I would recommend resetting the workspace (F8 as it loads), or repairing (from the add/remove programs option), or un-installing and re-installing it again.

Can you upload one of the pix so others can try on it?
Also, have you tried resetting the brushes? Open up the Brush Settings
docker and at the top it says Stroke Style and has a button with an arrow
facing to the right - click it and a menu pops up with some options. Choose
Reset All Brush Types. Does that help?

This worked for me!

 Close Corel and reopen holding the F8 key to restore to default settings

For the past 2 weeks I too have suffered this very same condition (X4 tho), my solution appeared when I discovered your post here on the X3 side.

I never had luck with F8 so never gave it a thought .. but then suddenly .. 

Whoohoo !

 Still no luck.......................this sucks. 

Can you upload one of the pictures so I others can play around with it?

 By any chance, are you using a Wacom tablet? I used to have this problem once in a while, it would come and go and depended on what kind of brushes I used previous to the clone tool. The latest Wacom driver took care of this issue for me and since X4 I never had a problem.
