Richard, I have no idea how to fix your issue...........exept I'm wondering why you uninstalled X3 first?
I never, ever take off the previous version before loading a new one.. As a matter of fact, I have 4 different versions of Corel running on this computer..............for various reasons....and have never had an install problem.
All four versions live very happily together....even if several are opened at the same time.
I'm sure someone with some "real" technical advice will chime in and help you. All I know is that I would have never taken X3 off first.
Hold down F8 on start up. See if that helps.

Try running the installation (of X4) again and select "Repair" option.

1. Have a look and see if Windows Media Player works. It seems like something happened in one or more MS service packs to some machines that deregistered a number of files. If that is the case there is a long thread here when X4 was first released that has a heap of trouble shooting solutions.

You could try that to clean up the registry... it's about $50
3. Or do a Google for a program called "Dependency Walker" (free) which might help you locate which file that is required is missing on your system. It's for the 'brave' but it might give you a clue what you should be looking for.
Go through the list in that order... You will see lots of solutions that did and didn't work in that thread.

Sorry I couldn't point to a solution for you. There have been some problems that don't come from Corel. I've had my share of them. At least 95% of the beta group had not quirky issues. I had more than most. I guess partly because I loaded XP when it came out and never loaded it or reformatted the disk again. In fact I've moved it onto a new disk twice. I guess I might of picked up some issues through all that. I subscribe to the find and fix method as opposed to the reformat when ever there is a problem.
There are some other tools attached to the long post. You can find them here...

called installclean.zip or something like that. If you uninstall and run those it usually fixes most issues.
I have the same problem: after install the trial version of Corel Draw Graphic Suite X4, when try to run any Corel application, first show me an empty messagebox:
next show me an error:
later a Microsoft Visual C++ Error:
and finally a fatal error:
The details are:
and the error file is: http://rapidshare.com/files/111268561/f773_appcompat.txt.html
Can anyone help me to fix this problem??
My take on this is that your installer is corrupted... have you tried to download the trial again?
