Having been a Corel Draw X3 user for some time, I decided to try Corel Draw X4 Graphics Suite. Afterfirst uninstalling X3, installation went smoothly on myXP/SP3 laptop but when I try to run application all I get is empty Windows message box with yellow exclamation mark followed by error box "Failed to load appboxid.xml file" followed by MS C++ runtime error box "Program........CorelDRW.exe abnormal program termination". Have tried downloading installation again, re-booting, un & re-installing, but always the same results. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Richard Wood

Richard, I have no idea how to fix your issue...........exept I'm wondering why you uninstalled X3 first?

I never, ever take off the previous version before loading a new one.. As a matter of fact, I have 4 different versions of Corel running on this computer..............for various reasons....and have never had an install problem.

All four versions live very happily together....even if several are opened at the same time.

I'm sure someone with some "real" technical advice will chime in and help you. All I know is that I would have never taken X3 off first.

Thanks for reply Diane I uninstalled X3 first as I was planning on going over to X4. Although in retrospect it's not necessaryin this case, many large intrusive programs require that previous version be un-installed first. This often happens by request or automatically & is known as a clean install particularly if you use a registry cleaner & remove any previous program fragments left behind by less than thorough un-installers. This policy has always worked for me. In any case I know I can re-install X3 easily. Regarding my problem I note reference to similar one on this forum at http://coreldraw.com/forums/t/5351.aspx Unfortunately the answer doesn't help. I have tried repair on present installation with Kaspersky Internet Security closed. In any case this application would report on any intrusion to the installation process. I assume the file causing the problem is something to do with registration. I'm guesing it's missing or access is denied. Seems that the answer to this problem may be simple once I have it. I have contacted Corel Support but no reply yet. If anyone else could help I would be most grateful. Thanks - Richard

Hold down F8 on start up. See if that helps.

Thanks for suggestion Yani, but the problem I have involves loading registration file I believe. Because of this I have not managed to even open application yet. Richard

Try running the installation (of X4) again and select "Repair" option.

Thanks Hugh. Already tried repair with KIS AV turned off, plus un/re-installation. Always the same result. The file it has problem loading is appboxid.xml. It exists in Programs folder & contains ApplicationRegKey set as: CorelDRAW\14.0 Unfortunately I cannot show you exact contents as xml is interpreted in this message. The application is obviously trying to initialise/run the Activation process but this is where it fails. Richard
Corel sent me this solution: 1. Click Start, then go to Run. 2. In the text box, type %appdata% then press OK 3. In the window that appears, find and rename the folder Corel. 4. Also, rename the folder My Pictures. 5. Try to run the CorelDRAW X4 again. It didn't work. Same response if I try to run any of the applications in the Suite. Seems the problem is related to how Windows runs the application, i.e. not a fault with Corel software as such. Any other suggestions? Richard

1. Have a look and see if Windows Media Player works. It seems like something happened in one or more MS service packs to some machines that deregistered a number of files. If that is the case there is a long thread here when X4 was first released that has a heap of trouble shooting solutions.

http://coreldraw.com/forums/t/3868.aspx

2. http://www.liutilities.com/products/campaigns/affiliate/order/rb/

You could try that to clean up the registry... it's about $50

3. Or do a Google for a program called "Dependency Walker" (free) which might help you locate which file that is required is missing on your system. It's for the 'brave' but it might give you a clue what you should be looking for.

Go through the list in that order... You will see lots of solutions that did and didn't work in that thread.

Thanks Yani 1. WMP works fine 2. I regularly use CCleaner (CrapCleaner) - highly recommended & free 3. Tried Dependency Walker & it immediately found missing dwmapi.dll when running any of the X4 suite modules. Further investigation reveals that it's a Vista delay load module & should not be called under XP which I am using. Apparently it's been a problem for some IE7 users with XP, although mine works fine. Unfortunately this doesn't help me if X4 wants to run it. Even if I could get a copy of it I doubt if I could register it under XP. Guess I need to go back to Corel Support - at least I have the definitive problem now. Thanks again for pointer to Depency Walker - great tool. Richard

Sorry I couldn't point to a solution for you. There have been some problems that don't come from Corel. I've had my share of them. At least 95% of the beta group had not quirky issues. I had more than most. I guess partly because I loaded XP when it came out and never loaded it or reformatted the disk again. In fact I've moved it onto a new disk twice. I guess I might of picked up some issues through all that. I subscribe to the find and fix method as opposed to the reformat when ever there is a problem.

There are some other tools attached to the long post. You can find them here...

http://www.imagonullius.com/corel-ng/

called installclean.zip or something like that. If you uninstall and run those it usually fixes most issues.

Thanks for all your help Yani but have given up on X4. I'm sure your right that it's an issue outside Corel installation but I can't find it. Corel support answer was to use msconfig to stop all non-MS applications running at start-up & re-install, but that would mess up my customised start-up list. Even then problem would probably re-appear when I enabled them. They were not interested in investigating the Vista .dll issue as they have no other record of it. Note that at least one other user on this forum did have the same issue though. See http://coreldraw.com/forums/t/5351.aspx For the record re-installed X3 which ran perfectly & registered automatically, so I now have a working CorelDraw application again. Richard

I have the same problem: after install the trial version of Corel Draw Graphic Suite X4, when try to run any Corel application, first show me an empty messagebox:

next show me an error:

later a Microsoft Visual C++ Error:

and finally a fatal error:

The details are:

and the error file is: http://rapidshare.com/files/111268561/f773_appcompat.txt.html

Can anyone help me to fix this problem??

I have an outstanding query on this issue with Corel Support. I have given them link to this thread. They have promised to investigate as soon as possible. Regards - Richard

My take on this is that your installer is corrupted... have you tried to download the trial again?
