With the .msp File on your desktop, right click on the file and select the properties. On the compatibility tab, select win2k or XP and select the run as administrator box.

     Cross your fingers.

If that doesn't work, I am out of ideas.

    Good luck.

That's just it, Rikk. With the .msp file there IS NO compatibility tab.
(that's why I tried the rename to .exe thing).

I'll have to do some hunting in the Vista documentation/newsgroups.

    Thanks anyway.

Re: Corel Draw 12 and vista

I even tried creating a .bat file that could launch the .msp file (because you can set XP compatibility for .bat files), and that didn't work either.

In my searching, I have come across some references to "Orca", a Microsoft utility that lets you open, modify, etc. .msi and .msp files. There's even a way to apply the patch (.msp) to the original installer file (.msi), which may circumvent our problem with the patch launching on its own. I may not have time for a few days to explorer it further, and I know very little about programming, but I'm willing to give it a shot. If someone beats me to it, all the better!  :)

Let's keep trying. Please let me know if you have any other info, suggestions, or success getting version 12 patched on Vista.

I see the issue now. I went back and tried to duplicate your steps only to discover that my CDraw 12 Disks are already at SP1 level. That is why I did not encounter the difficulties you are having. With so many software installations over the last month, (New Vista Machine and a Convert of Existing Laptop), it is all beginning to run together for me.

I will do some more research and get back to you if I find out anything. Keep plugging.

I have a solution to implementing the update file and it is stupidly simple.

It occured to me that any patch file I ever delt with was usually only concerned with the exe file and in the case of smaller software companies I would often only have to copy and paste the new exe to correct folder.

I have corel with the update on an XP machine also and I have a local network. See where I am going?

I was going to just copy the exe files but just in case there were some other updated files for the help files etc I copied and pasted/overwrite the entire Corel folder from the XP machine to the Vista machine.

Ahaa, Party!!!worked like a charm. The Vista machine is now at build 538 also. I fooled around with a few files in draw and photopaint and found no issues so far.

Mine showed that there were 274 megs of files to deal with so this could be done with a CD transfer also. My data files are stored elsewhere so they did not come into play.

    Have fun, Dave

Good thinking, Dave! I do have v.12 updated on another machine, so will
try that when I get back in town. (Off to work on my mother's house for
    a week.)

    Hello,

I would recommend against copying the application directory from one computer to another... there might have been changes to the registery and other files in the Windows folder that you will not get using this method.

According to other sites, the way to install .msp files is to launch the Command Prompt as an Administrator (From the Windows menu, right click on Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator). Then use the msiexec command to launch the upgrade process. If you do a google search for "install .msp vista", you should find a few web sites that provide more information. I simply have to add that all I am writing here is untested and un-supported by Corel.

Re: Corel Draw 12 and vista

Thanks! I was hoping you'd chime in. I was going to wait the week anyway since I'm leaving town and hate breaking things just before I take off.

I don't actually USE version 12 anymore, but with students running who knows what, it's good to be able to see the applications side by side at times. I'm also sure SOMEONE will ask the question of 12 and Vista and it's good to be able to quote (without naming) someone who knows. Of course, I'll always give the same "official" line you do. "Only X3 has been officially tested and certified to run on Vista."

Re: Corel Draw 12 and vista

Hi! I read this thread with interest, since I am having this same problem. :(

Corel 12 installed perfectly on my new Vista laptop and runs no problem. The trouble isn't 12s compatibility with the operating system. The trouble is the same old 12 bug Corel had to fix with SP1:  a random 'out of memory' message that causes you to have to shut down Corel Photopaint and lose your work.  XP or Vista doesn't matter, this is the same old bug.

Yes, I can upgrade.  But that costs a lot of money.  If it was a true compatibility programming issue, I could see the costs for Corel would be too much for backwards compatibility.  But what we are talking about here is only an install delivery process to fix a bug that has nothing to do with Vista.

I am hoping someone here has found a solution to the problem since July.  A work-around or something.  I pretty much tried everything I could think of--but my brain is small so my list is short...

    <fingers crossed for help!>

Edit:  (Sorry, my brain...)  I should have added that I have tried some of the command prompt based suggestions online.

msiexec /p cgs12sp1en.msp /a   This launches the installer info box.  Nice.  But not sure where to go from there.

msiexec /install cgs12sp1en.msp   This launches the installer, but with the same "installation was interrupted" problem.  So a no-go.

I've tried other combinations, also.  Not really sure how to proceed.

I haven't seen a good answer yet either, but if one comes along, I'm
sure somebody will post it here.

    Answer

Here's the soloution, it's relatively easy.

Create a CMD file with the command line to install the msp patch, then right click on the cmd file and select Run as Administrator.

    Details:

Open Computer > C: click Organize > Folder and Search Options

Click the View Tab uncheck Hide extensions for known file types, click ok

Right-Click on empty space in the folder Window, Click New > Folder on the context menu.

Type SP1 and press enter to name the folder, press enter again to go into the folder.

Right-Click on empty space in the folder Window, Click NewText Document on the context menu.

Erase New Text Document.txt and type a name for the cmd file like Install SP1.cmd and press enter.

Right-Click on Install SP1.cmd and Click Edit

In the Notepad window type msiexec /p c:\SP1\CGS12SP1LMP.msp

Note: If your patch file has a different name replace CGS12SP1LMP.msp with the name of your patch file.

Click File > Save (Close notepad if desired)

Copy the downloaded patch file into the C:\SP1 folder.

Right-Click on Install SP1.cmd and click Run as administrator

You will be prompted to confirm the elevation to administrator and the rest of the process is exactly like it would be on XP

Thanks! I've been really busy the last couple of weeks and haven't had time to work on v.12, but I've got this solution saved to try as soon as I've got time.

Re: Corel Draw 12 and XP Home Ed.

Hi peeps I have had this .msi issue with Corel Suite 12 before, but this is the first time I've been caught without a copy of Disk 1 to be able do do a re-install. I have a whole bunch of stuff that is much easier completed in Draw 12 than Draw 8 that I upgraded from (and still have on my system). The error message I've been getting from Corel Suite 12 when it attempts to load is as follows... "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable" Thank you in advance to anyone who can provide a method to resolve this; I have a whole bunch of stuff I need to get done in Corel Suite 12 that I 'd have to start from scratch in Corel 8 Peace Aaron

AM REALLY sorry or barging in/posting here, but as new member I cannot find WHERE to post new message. Your understanding and asisitance will be greatly appreciated..
