Italicized text lost when publishing to PDF

 Hello all, new to the forum.

Our company recently upgraded us to X4 from Corel 10. It was quite a change to say the least. The more I use X4, the more I wish they would have left it alone. If it's not broke, fix it anyway!

The problem that we are experiencing is when performing 'File / Publish to PDF' with a file that contains italicized text. When viewing the PDF the text is no longer Italic. The font in particular is Frankfurt Gothic Heavy, Italic. I haven't tested other fonts yet to see if it is broadbased or not.  A way that seems to work fine, that doesn't lose the Italic from the text, is if I create the PDF differently by clicking 'File', 'Print' and choosing 'Adobe PDF' as the printer.

Has anyone experienced a similar situation or know of a fix? is there a setting somewhere that I am missing?

It sounds as if the Italic version of the font isn't embedded when you
Publish to PDF. Without knowing all of the settings you've chosen, it is
hard to give you a more accurate answer.

Or perhaps this font is restricted and not capable of embedding. I've noticed a pervasive issue with many pdf's that I've downloaded for manuals, instructions etc. lately. Quite often these pdf's doesn't have the font embedded, makes for some interesting reading results!  I would suggest converting to curves, or if editing isn't an issue convert to a btimap. 

I had a font here that would print bold but would appear as normal and correct on screen. Where did the original font come from? Was it open type or true type?

From memory mine was an old TT font. The easy solution was to just replace the font.

 It's a Corel font from what I understand and came with Corel. I uninstalled the font and re-installed it to no avail. When selecting the text in Acrobat with the text edit tool, right clicking on it and selecting "properties" it recognizes the text as "Frankfurt Gothic Heavy Italic". The font appears fine in the PDF document other than the fact that it is no longer italicized. I did check to see if it was embedded and it said it was unable to embed it because there was no system font available which I think is odd since it's a Corel font. All of the other fonts embed fine.

In the PDF Settings, did you UNCHECK Convert TrueType to PostScript? This
setting caused me a lot of grief recently when a font wouldn't embed
properly.

I have Acrobat 7 and don't have that option, but I do have one that says Convert True Type to Type 1. It was checked, so I unchecked it and tried again and it didn't work. I still have Corel 10 and everything works just fine. X4 says the font in question can't be embedded but version 10 doesn't say anything (which is why it probably works!).

I might be reaching WAY out there and am not sure if this would cause it, but read below and see if it could be a problem:

The creation date of our copy of the font is 1992. I don’t know if a more current copy exists, but the one that resides on our PC’s originated from a real early version of Corel. When Corel was originally installed on our PC’s, we had Windows 3.0 at that time, which was a 16 bit O.S. Windows XP, which we have now, is a 32 bit O.S. Not sure if that would have an effect or not, but you never know. Ever since Windows 3.0, we have upgraded operating systems from 3.0 to Win 95 to NT and then to XP. Corel software upgrades here have gone from 3 to 4 to 5 to 7 to 10 and now X4. Even with all of the computer upgrades, the original hard drive contents from “back in the day” are maintained because our IT department just images the hard drive and transfers that onto a new hard drive. Our IT department has Corel on a server now with seat licenses, so only the program files our on our PC’s and not the entire disc contents as if you were to install the program onto your PC at home.

 I guess it looks like we need to find a different font that can be embedded then.

I also noticed that Switzerland can't be embedded either and we use that one quite a bit.

Craig,

You've identified the problem. It is that the font is not allowed to be
embedded. CorelDRAW X4 more closely enforces this than previous versions.
I've had it complain about fonts I have. Typically it is happening to me
with freebie fonts I've gotten off the Net. It isn't that the designer said
to not allow embedding, they just didn't do anything to allow it. Given that
the font you are using is so old, it probably was also before embedding was
widely used and so the setting to allow it wasn't turned on in the font.
You'll need to find a newer version of the font to get it working.

Try using Distiller.

What are your PDF settings?
