When using "Publish to PDF" and clicking on "Settings" in the "Publish to PDF" window ("Document Distribution" and "Web" presets both cause problem) X4 crashes every time. Adobe Acrobat 8.1.2 Standard is installed.
X4 will sometimes allow a large file (1 MB) to be Saved when I haven't clicked on the "Settings" button, but more often than not when I then open file in Adobe 8 it (Adobe) says there is an error processing page in that there was a problem reading the document.
Yikes.
X3 worked flawlessly. X4 giving me headaches. Using WinXP.
I've done heaps of PDF file that are much bigger that 1Mb without issues. Which may mean you are using a setting combo that is different to here. So you will need to list the setting used for a comparison.
However I have in previous version had files which failed to create PDF files because of a corrupt object in the drawing file. Because of this I output to PDF as part of a development process and use those PDFs which are free of guides to softproof the job as I go. That way if a problem crops up I can identify it by systematicially deleting most recent objects. Likewise I saveAs version of the file as I go.
The trick is that you are using a computer which is subject to perfect imperfection and many of the issue raised in the forum are resolved by lerning how to 'work safe'.Strangely when I have good work practises I never need them as everything works like silk. As soon as I think (or forget) that I'm using a computer subject to errors then I usually regret it.
Just to be sure I've tested both document and web presets on a 16 page file that is fairly complex (14Mb) and I don't see an issue.
Acrobat version is 8.1.1
Is your issue with one file or many totally different files?
Have you done some basic maintenance like delete temp files and a disk error check?

The settings for pdf's have never been altered since installation of X4. I can't open the pdf settings to see what they are set at.
If I save the X4 file as an X3 file I can open the now X3 file in CorelX3, go to "Publish to PDF", and click on "Settings" without a problem. When I change settings to "Objects" tab to "Export all text as curves" I can also publish to pdf without an error.
When opening the now X3 file in Adobe Acrobat 8.1.2 I don't get the error which occurs in X4.
All I want to do is open the "Settings" in the X4 version of "Publish to PDF" so I can change them to "Export all text as curves" like I can in X3.
To get around this problem of mine with X4 I'm resorting to saving problematic X4 files in X3 format.
You need to answer the questions if you want help and control the panic (yes I know that feeling).
NOTICE: Fixed. Did Repair on Adobe 8.1.2 and cured setting problem. Problem was with Adobe.
I'm having the same problem that nanaimobar described, but I'm perplexed by his solution. I'm running CDX4 on a brand new Windows Vista Home Premium machine. 4gb memory, scads of hard drive space. I produce a 28-page, tab-size newspaper twice a month. Average 93 mb CorelDraw file. CD 11 had no problem publishing the whole file to PDF.
Ever since upgrading to CDX4 I have not been able to publish my newspaper file to PDF with access to Settings. I can publish smaller files ... one page up to 10 pages or so ... but when I try to publish the whole file to PDF and click on the settings button, CorelDraw locks up then crashes. My workaround at present is to publish a small file in order to set the right PDF style so that it "sticks" in the selection, and then publish my large file to PDF using that style. Or, I save out of CDX4 as a Ver11 file, go to the old machine, call up CD11, and publish to PDF from there.
Not exactly an elegant way to do it, especially since you'd think things were supposed to get better and easier with each upgrade.
I'm curious about the Repair on Adobe 8.1.2 solution. I currently use Acrobat 6.0 Standard, but it hadn't been installed on my new machine yet. I was under the impression that PDF distilling was built in to CorelDraw. And, indeed, PDF publishing works on smaller files flawlessly without Acrobat even being installed.
Out of curiosity, I installed Acrobat 6.0 on my new machine, but I don't see any "Repair" option.
Is this enough new information for somebody to chew on and possible guide me toward a solution?
Thanks in advance,
Dave
Further clues. If I start with the 28-page, 93mb file and begin whittling down the number of pages, eventually I arrive at the point where I can click on the Settings button and the Settings box will appear. Around 15 pages or so. However, even at that point, if I click on the "Issues" tab, CorelDraw will crash. It's only when I whittle it down to about 5 pages can I click on the Issues tab and the Issues box will come up without crashing.
Surely there must be a logical reason.

I don't know if Repair was available in Acrobat 6, but in 8.1.2 it's in the Help drop-down menu.
The amount of memory available for X4 can be set through Tools, Options, Workspace, then Memory. Check that and check the amount of swap disk space you've allocated in Vista, if you haven't alread checked these.
Hello nanaimobar,
Thanks for the tips. I did a rebuild and repair on Acrobat 6.0. Then I went into CorelDraw options to change its memory allocation from 25% to 50%, and then to 75%, and then finally to 100%. There was no change in Publish to PDF behavior. With my 93mb file loaded up in CorelDraw I clicked on Publish to PDF, and as soon as I selected "Settings" the whole Publish to PDF box went black. When I got tired of staring at the black box waiting for something to happen and clicked on it I got the "CorelDraw has stopped working" message with the Close Program option. I repeated this several times.
Also, my Page File maximum allocation is 3,600mb.
I know the problem sounds like memory, but I've got plenty, and everything about this machine is brand new.
If anybody from CorelDraw monitors this forum, I sure would appreciate any ideas he or she might have.
Thanks,

Hi Todd,
Thanks, those are good suggestions. I tried one of them real quick, and found out that Print to Distiller is not one of the options in my Printer menu from CorelDraw. I do have Distiller 6.0 installed. So, I don't know what gives.
I'll be breaking my documents down and trying some of the other ideas in the next couple of days and get back to you.

Thanks for the tip. I followed the directions at the link for setting Print Spooler and doing the Detect and Repair.
The repair came back with this error message:
Warning 20225. Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Setup was unable to create a new Adobe PDF Converter. The Adobe PDF Printer may be unavailable. GetLastErro: The parameter is incorrect.
And the Adobe PDF Printer is definitely not in the Printers and Faxes list.
