Asked just for fun. I think drawing/painting  and music belong together.

Here is my list:

for quick and expressive drawings I listen to alternative rock like Blind Age(unknown to the most of you, friends to me), Linkin' Park, 3Doors Down, Alter Bridge, and many more.

for very freaky ideas I listen to Dream Theatre(though I can't stand that only for 1-2 hours...)

for moody titles and chilley works I listen to recreative Ambient&Trance Techno like XERXES, Martin O'Donnel(Soundtrack from HALO2) and several else.

Now let me know yours...

Hrm....Outside of Paul, I don't think anyone here is old enough to know the music that I listen to while I work....Angel  But it is basically old, old, oldies. Going back to the 30's, 40's and 50's. Plus Sinatra, et al.

(I must be older than dirt.....to be that far into the past...)

Does that explain why the words and music of "I'm gonna dance with the dolly with a hole in her stocking" suddenly popped into my head and refused to leave my head for days after (without the radio or any other talking device being on) while I was working on a set of illustrated instructions to a potential manufacturer of a proposed device.

For those not in the know that tune was ca 1944, but was originally written in 1844!

Funny thing is that before I retired I had the radio on in the office all day, tuned to the (mostly) classical local station. Since retiring I don't think I have turned a radio on more than twice.

When I am thinking about ideas, I normally switch the music off, but when I am doing the actual design or painting/drawing, something energetic like skinny puppy, porter, etc, can do the trick. I tend to listen to a lot of "alternative" rock, but cuban or mexican sones also make me spin.

Interesting question... so I'll help the "older than dirt" guys out with my typical in office tunes that come from the Classic Jazz channel on Sirius, or if it's later in the day I'll listen to programs on Discovery or History channel for a change (usually when I'm in the stage of monotonous repetitive design).

It's been several years since I had a radio in the office as well, but back then I would vasilate between 50's rock and roll, talk and classic rock. As for my music collection, it gets more play time when I'm mobile and varies between U2, Sinatra, Earth Wind & Fire, Moody Blues, Michael Buble, Santana, Steppenwolf, Jean Michael Jarre, ELP, Dave Brubeck, Yes, Neil Diamond, Gato Barbieri, Fleetwood Mac, Beatles, Burt Bacharach, Enya, Carly Simon, Cher, Gnarls Barkley, John Tesh, Yellowjackets, James Blunt, John Barry, Quincy Jones, Guess Who, Sergio Mendez, Sarah Brightman, ... I could go on, but I would think I get the award for most diverse!

Guys, I am very amazed about the count of replies!! Really there are very interessting and different types of music, so unique like the works and arts! The music which is listened by you and is foreign to me: I will check each one out, cause I'm always searching for new influences!

sector6:

Hard Floor, Spice Lab....Strickly Underground!!

sometimes I listen to that too! But I have to be in a very energized mood...And then I can't keep sitting patiently working in front of my Laptop...

Hugh Johnson:

Going back to the 30's, 40's and 50's. Plus Sinatra

I can imagine listening to those oldies "older than dirt" too(Aren' they "Evergreens"?), it might be interessting what the inspiration and the result would be!

Paul McGee:

"I'm gonna dance with the dolly with a hole in her stocking"

Paul, this is one I know too, am I old know? Lol

Ariel:

Yeah, Ariel, Jean Michel Jarré might be the one on top of the list of many Artists, I love his "soundscape"-like music! Do you know the guys from "software"? I don't know if they still exist, their time was back in the eighties...In music we seem to be on the same wavelength. Interessting!

You got my vote for the award for most diverse, stodare! :-)) An impressive and well known collection, where everyone of us surely find his faves.

Being an Indian, I don't listen to any of the music discussed here. But I am an Indian oldie and love to hear Kishore Kumar, one of the Indian master singers. And especially I love to listen his emotional solos he sung in 60's, 70's

GREAT ARTISTE, unfortunately no more with us.

Hi, Anand, I was search about Kishore Kumar and I download a song (neelay neelay amber pe). Sounds fabulous! I don't undestand one word but the music sounds genial. My daughter (seven years old) to dance with their music and asked me: more music like that. So I download to another, (chand mera dil, from kishore kumar, mohd rafi & asha bhosl ). In a part of this song, sounds like ABBA. So many great artists we are losing because of lack of information! Can you tell me more similar music to listen? or do you recommend me a song?

thanks for share this wonderful artist with us

Anand, Ive tried Kishore Kumar, and the funny thing is, I could hear his songs the hole day. I am also interessted in more of this music culture!

@ Ariel: If Jean Michel Jarré would do any visual Arts, many of us would be interessted what the Arts would be! What I've ment with the list of Artists: Every Artist use serveral sences and inputs of influence. And music might be important for many of them. But Jarré might be the most listened by many Artists. I could imagine you're listening to Vangelis too, dont you?

Honestly said: I tend to hear even Classics, Operas and Synphonies, or movie soundtracks (Howard Shore for example). There is no way I don't dare to go for the right music in the right moment.

If you think in all Arts as one, you can unify music, visual arts, painting, lights, colors...  can you imagine the sound of the colors? can you imagine a music when you see some colors o some images?

One of the most popular music of Mike Oldfield is Tubular Bells, the sound of The Exorcist. The Orchestral Tubular Bells is a wonderful piece.

Of course I can. We were'nt Artists if we could not. Ariel: thank you very much for all those YouTube links!

I've watched them, my favorite among these was the powerful voice of Francesca Gagnon - Cirque du Soleil - Alegria.

Fantastic!
