    Stray fonts

Here's something that's bugged me not just in this version of X4 and not just Corel... why do fonts still hang around even after they have been deleted from the design/document? You have no remaining element of that font on any layer, and yet you receive a notice to substitute or install that font when loading the file. I've had it happen with service bureaus, and other 3rd party vendors telling me that I need to supply a font when it's not in the design.

Isn't there some sort of tool that could do "clean up" duty on fonts? Obviously, there is some code or such hanging around that creates the confusion.

Ariel please elaborate... I've never found that docker to be of any use. It definitely doesn't list fonts, which it would need to clean them up, as well as have some command button. This might be going in the right direction however, if the engineers could add.

    Re: Stray fonts

Every style has at least one (probably two) fonts associated with it. The "properties" show this. As the styles are document specific they go along for the ride. Documents received from outside sources can contain many styles as some shops deliberately accumulate them in their "default" document--I think their aim is to drive those receiving the documents crazy.

    Re: Stray fonts

Paul thanks for the reply... but this still doesn't get to the root. Why do documents continue to contain fonts that aren't on the design page, and why isn't there a method for removing this stray information?

What got me started on this today, I loaded an older file from v12 to X4 and Panose requested a match. ALL of the fonts it listed were no where in the design, although at one time I'm sure in my "try this and that" moment they had been selected, but not used. There should be a tool for cleaning this up!

    Re: Stray fonts

Scott, have you had this problem ?

With prepare for service beureau, sometimes DRAW does not copy a font that is used and exists in the file & on the other hand some times its a problem that you mentioned.

And this does not happen always. Weired and difficult to identify when and why this occurs.

Sorry, Scott, I had not understood your message. As Paul, I thought you talk about the fonts that appear in the information of Document Propierties, contained in the document although they are not in use.

Only happens in this file, or also happens to others? Have you seen in this file if there are more styles than usual? Can you put one of those files to analyze it?

    Re: Stray fonts

    Anand -

I can't say that I've had a font not "copy." This might be an issue of your third party not having the font installed on their system. You can use "truedoc" to embed the font in your file so that won't happen.

    Ariel-

Create a file with text. On 1/3 of the text use Arial, the next 1/3 use Times Roman, and the final 1/3 Swiss (or substitute whatever you like). Now save the file. Next change the Swiss to Arial and make sure you have highlighted even the spaces so that no code is still present (essentially eliminating the use of that font in the file). Once again save and close the file. Make sure you have uninstalled Swiss in BFN. Now open the file and you should be prompted to install Swiss (even though the file no longer is using that font).

The file still retains the Swiss font info, even though it's no longer used in the file. I have had this happen when I take files to a service bureau, a sign vendor, etc. And it's not something isolated with Corel, when I worked with Professional Draw on the Amiga system, the same would happen. I know someone may conclude that some code is being deleted because it's a space, but I'm very careful when designing and don't believe that's the issue. I think code remains even after it has been deleted. Perhaps what we need is a magic decoder magnifying glass that passes over the page and highlights stray code to be eliminated?!

    Scott

I havent yet experienced it with X4 but this happens with me in 12 (frequently) & X3 (Sometimes). I am not sure when it happens but my observation is that it happens in case of the fonts that are not used on page one of the document & have been used in further pages. However it doent happen always. Not sure if it is related to my system.

Considering rare frequency of this problem, I have always ignored it. Was just curious if this happened to anyone else.

This happens to me so often with customer files that I now just ignore the warning, open the file and compare it to the hard copy they supplied to make certain it looks correct. For text heavy files, I will take the time to tell it to substitute any 'missing' fonts with a symbols font so that any missing text will be immediately obvious. Nine times out of ten, minimum, all the text is fine (converted to curves, even) and the missing font is not needed.

Honestly, if this doesn't happen to me at least three times a week, it's been a slow week. I'm currently using X4, but I've seen it ever since 8.

    Re: Stray fonts

It's certainly not an isolated instance with just Corel. I've had this happen in other page layout and design programs. It would be nice if it was addressed and a solution found. My theory is stray code gets stuck in the file that identifies the font, but isn't apparent on the page.

You're right that it usually doesn't have any effect, more of an annoyance. Back in the day of routine service bureau work I would get phone calls all the time about missing fonts. I like your suggestion to substitute for a symbol, that definitely would show up.

LOL! If you find a program that it DOESN'T happen in, at least occasionally, bronze it and put it with your keepsakes.
