Hi Rob,
My Way
How to avoid saving to a wrong format?
To avoid saving to a wrong format, I open one file only; the source CPT. 1
When ready, I export to web 2 (JPG, GIF or PNG), then test the output. If it needs modification, I duplicate the layer in the same CPT, modify, export 3 and test.
Why 'Duplicating Layers' and not 'Saving As'?
Sometimes the difference between a version and another is the location of one tiny layer. So I duplicate this layer, hide the old and export.
Also, this way you benefit from both Layers and Files; each for different purpose. See below.
When to 'Save As' another CPT?
When I need to start a new line of modifications, I save as CPT with an indicating name.
Conclusion
I use:
- New CPTs for new lines (themes); with the theme as a file name.
- New layers for versions in the same theme; with output file name as a layer name.
Back to the original post
I find both options below are better from what X4 and X3 do:
- Saving as same type and location of the Opened file
- Saving as same type and location of the Last saved as file
- Actually the source file is usually a CDR file, and I tweak pixels in Corel PHOTO-PAINT (see this post about pixel view).
- I meant export to a JPG, GIF… not the 'Export for Web' command.
- You can export Selected.
