How to preview wmf (windows metafile) files in Vista

Found a solution to previous post of mine regarding inability to preview wmf - windows metafile -files in Vista using corel x4, or Vista windows explorer.

There is a free program which allows wmf files (and other files) to be previewed in Vista. it's called IrfanView. Has plugins too.

Found info on wmf and vista at microsoft community here

Link to IrfanView web site to download free app. Plugins info.

    Pros: Free and works.

Cons: Cumbersome in that you have to view wmf files in IrfanView instead of natively within Vista or Corel.

I can view all my wmf files as thumbnails in Windows Explorer, then when I double click on the thumbnail it opens with Microsoft Office Picture Manager, It will also open with Windows Picture and Fax viewer if I right click the thumbnail and choose that program.

For awhile I lost viewing of all my thumbnails in Windows Explorer until I installed the ICO filter in CorelDraw under options / global / filters / raster, now I see thumbnails of everything.

Having said all that I am, however,  using Windows XP SP 2, that may be the difference.

What a pain, I was curious so I googled the internet and it appears Microsoft removed viewing of wmf because of a security flaw. I don't know how true it is but you are not alone in your annoyance about not being able to view them.

It is similar with WordPerfect wpg clipart thumbnails which I have on my old WordPerfect CD, I cannot view them in Windows Explorer nor can I view them in the CorelDRAW scrapbook even though Corel owns WordPerfect, go figure.

Yes, it was a security flaw found a couple of years ago and MS provided patches in SP2 for XP I believe.

Every once in a while on Vista there is a popup window from MS asking if you'd like to help them make Vista better. I'm going to help.

I have the same issue with Vista.  I found this program ST Thumbnails Explorer http://www.softfields.com  to work much better than Irfanview.
