When I use the rotate toolbar to enter the angle I need, the object rotates just like I want. Then I hit the apply button and some pretty heavy handed anti-aliasing is applied and the object is essentially destroyed. I've been using Paint for quite a long time so I figured there must be an option to turn this off. I can't find one. I even added the anti-aliasing button to the rotate toolbar and turned it off but that doesn't make any difference.

Essentially, what I want when I rotate an object is the chunky, pixelated preview, not the final anti-aliased so much you can't tell what it even is anymore final product.

At this point, I'm going to have to resort to rotating the object and taking a screenshot of the preview and using that instead of the mess that the final result is.

The best focal length for portraits

Hi Everybody.

QUESTION: What is the best focal length to use for portraits. (The
unwritten assumption seems to be that a "portrait" is from waist to head
plus space above the head. That is about three feet in height for an
adult.)
ANSWER: In the old days of 35 mm film cameras, the best focal length was
usually stated to be 85 mm/

QUESTION: What was so wonderful about using an 85 mm focal length for
portraits.
ANSWER: Photographers found it to be most pleasing for the following
reasons:
a. A substantially shorter focal length tended to emphasize the size
of the nose.
b. A substantially longer focal length tended to flatten features. It
made the face appear to be 2D.
c. Thus the 85 mm lens gave the most pleasing 3D rendition of a
portrait.

However, I don't use a 35 mm camera any more. Thus the question(s)
would now appear to be:
NEW QUESTIONS: What is the best focal length for portraiture for the
following situations.
DSLR
Four thirds camera
Various point and shoot cameras
APS-C sensor
1/1.8 sensor
Other combinations of camera and sensors

In addition, we should ask the following questions.
SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONS:
What's the best focal length to use for head shots.
What's the best focal length to use for a full length figure.
What's the best focal length to use for a figure in a scene when we
plan on cropping the figure to get an additional print.

Let me proudly announce that I can answer those questions.
Nevertheless, it's not worth the trouble. Those are the wrong questions to
ask about getting the most pleasing 3D effect on a photo of a face.

HOW COME THEY ARE THE WRONG QUESTIONS ?????

ANSWER:
Perspective has absolutely nothing to do with the focal length of the
lens, the size of the sensor, or the size of the subject. Test if for
yourself. Take a picture of a scene using a wide angle lens and another
picture of the same scene using a long telescopic lens from the same
position. Superimpose the scene from the tele on the one from the wide
angle lens. They will be identical.

PERSPECTIVE IS DETERMINED BY THE RELATIVE DISTANCES OF OBJECTS TO THE
CAMERA.

Everything else is irrelevant to perspective.

So what should the questions be ??

There is only one question for all combinations of the above situations.
QUESTION: What should the subject to camera distance be to get the most
pleasing perspective rendering of a human face in accordance with the old 85
mm recommendation.

I couldn't find it stated anywhere so I derived it from the original
recommendation. It only takes basic lens theory and a little geometry. The
attached diagram illustrates the problem and solution. If anyone wants a
further explanation, I will supply it.

THE DISTANCE FROM CAMERA TO SUBJECT SHOULD BE ABOUT SEVEN FEET.

This is true for any and all combinations of cameras, focal lengths,
sensor size, head shots, head and shoulders, full figure, etc. The reason
is simply that perspective only depends on subject to camera distance.

Phil
PS: Personally, I prefer a much greater distance from camera to subject.
The subject is more comfortable at greater distances. Besides, lighting is
better than perspective at creating a 3D effect.

Docker wierdness

Hi, I sometimes use PP to edit the sizes of the background of images, but since we got our new laptops (windows 7 64 bit) and started working with dual screens, I cannot see the fly-out menu thingy where I'm supposed to put in the sizes when I click adjust image background size. It is as if it is off screen, and when I press escape it allows me to save and edit further, but not to change the background size - grrrrrrrrr.

Photo Paint is simply crashing too often! I am losing work sometimes stuff that I just put a lot of time and effort into. When I try saving it, the Save button (or Export button) simply doesn't respond. I can't save the work, and soon afterward it crashes. Sometimes I get an 'out of memory' error.

Other times, if I have several images open at the same time, zooming produces a blank screen, like it is out of memory and can't render the image. This usually means it will crash soon, too.

Getting exasperated here ... The new Service Pack 1 that automatically downloaded and installed had my hopes soaring, but it appears to have done little to solve Photo Paint's problems. It may have mostly been for Draw. I am nearing the point where I reinstall my X3 and give up on X5, at least until Corel fixes these problems. I can't keep losing my work. :(

1. Can't avoid hot spots...:-(....If I turn them down until the hot spot disappears, then it's way too dark. The falloff seems very small, and none of the options seem to address the falloff. I dealt with this two ways in PSE:

a) In PSE, I could move the light far out of the image on any margin to avoid hot spots. In PP, I can move it out of the image only to the sides, but not above or below the image (!)....

b) In PSE I could adjust the length and width of the cone separately; in PP they seem to go tegether. So I can't make a light eg., long and thin.

2. Atmosphere>Image>Brightness has not visible effect on the image....

Any referrals to tutorials or articles would be much appreciated. THANKS!

Tool cursor shapes

Is it possible to customise the cursor type designs in PhotoPaint x5?

The excellent Clone tool has, in shape mode, a cursor comprised of two sizeable circles or squares (selectable) which give a pretty accurate indication of the extent (size) of the brush. The source circle/square contains a centralised cross-hair but the paint circle/square does not. I can only assume that someone came up with the idea that this would provide an at-a-glance way of telling the two apart but the ability to line up the centres and edges is lost. One can of course change to cross-hair mode to get accurate alignment of centres (which is what I am currently doing - tedious!) but one then loses the indication of brush size and shape. In my opinion it would be better to have an indication of centres and perimeters in both source and paint shapes and find some other visual cue to differentiate them (even a X and + set of cross hairs would be better than nothing.)

Any suggestions?

replace 'empty' pixels (C0M0Y0K0)

Hello

In Corel PhotoPaint X5 I need to replace all the C0M0Y0K0 pixels in a 32-bit
JPG file with C1M1Y1K1 pixels, without changing the rest of the picture.

I have already tried this with 'replace colors', but I either end up with some
remaining C0M0Y0K0 pixels, either with the rest of the picture changed as well.

Can someone please advise?
Thanks in advance

I would like another step by step example so I can experiment withe above youtube tutorial example and the example provided here (if someone can provide one) .

I have 2 goals:

1) Modify an image to make it more vibrant but not exaggerate the HDR output, keep it kind of close to the original
2) Modify an image in such a way to actually create a surrealistic output (so now I do want to exaggerate)

I don't know if "exaggerate" is the correct term to use in the description of my 2 goals, but I hope you can understand what I mean with it.

Converting Bitmaps to Vectors

I've read a lot of posts on converting bitmaps to vectors, but none that address what I'm trying to do. I think this should be extremely easy. I have simple outline drawings - like stars or paisleys - that I scan into PhotoPaint X5. So, to turn it into a vector drawing, I manually fill the outline drawing with the paintbrush, convert it to 1 bit, import it into CorelDraw, use the Trace Bitmap - outline trace - clip art, then do a hairline outline and remove the fill. I end up with a hairline outline of the original object that I can send to my laser. The objects must remain the same size as the original drawing.

Here's why I do some of what I outlined above. First, I manually fill the drawing because if I try to do the trace bitmap in CorelDraw X5 using the outline trace, it traces both the inside and the outside of the original line drawing because the line is thick. If I try the Trace Bitmap and select Centerline Trace, I the result is a jaggy line which won't work.

If there is a better way of doing this, I'd appreciate the help. I think what I need most is a way to fill the object automatically rather than paint the inside of it. I thought I could just select the object in PhotoPaint and click on the fill, but it seems that the "object" is the outline drawing plus the background, so the fill ends up being the whole "object" including the background. I can Lasso the outline drawing and move it around on the background, but can't figure out how to do much else.

Thanks for your help!

Somehow my Corel Draw PhotoPaint X5 mouse cursor recently changed when using tools.

For example when I use tools for painting I don't see which pixels are going to be affected when I stroke. Normally I see wich area (surrounding the cursor) is going to be painted, now I have to guess. I do see the mousecursor, or tool cursor. I don't now which setting is changed and how to get this handy basic functionality back.
