I have a PNG image that contains a drop shadow that I would like to remove.  The shadow pixels appear as RGB = 0,0,0 (black) with varying transparency.

What would be the best way to remove the drop shadow using PP X3?  Is there a way to create a new channel from the transparency in the image?

Also, for some reason, I don't seem to see mask marquees in my image even though I have the mask marquee button pressed.

Thanks!!

Then "technically" the shadow is *not* truly black (and really no shadow is
truly only a single color)

PPX3 doesn't really do PNG transparency all that well. What is the image of?
Are you able to recreate it in Draw? If so, Draw will give you proper
looking PNGs with transparency.

If you don't need transparency at all, just get out the eraser tool and
remove the shadow areas.

  1. merge all objects to background so that you can see everything clearly
  2. make a new mask for areas you want to keep
  3. save as new PNG

Thanks for the input as I am not a graphic designer.  The images are small graphics that I downloaded from the web to be used in a Silverlight tutorial that I am working through.

I ended up masking off the shadow using the magic wand and then used the eraser tool to erase it.  That seems to have worked well.  Apparently, the eraser tool replaces the color of each pixel, including the alpha channel, with white, because the eyedropper tool shows RGB=0,0,0 before erase, and RGB=255,255,255 after erase.  But there must be transparency on the shadow because the the RGB=0,0,0 pixels before the erase do not show up as black, but as shades of grey (as I think would be expected with a drop shadow).

I still can't figure out why the mask marquee is not showing up.  I have never had that problem in the past.  Maybe an issue with PP X3 running on Windows 7?

I was a little surprised to see that PP will not show me the alpha channel in the file when clearly there is one.  Must be a PNG issue.

Thanks again!!
