is this happening to anyone else? (and is there a fix?):
when I choose one block of artistic text and adjust the character spacing in the docker window, everything works fine ... but when I marquee or pick two or more items of text and try to adjust the character spacing for all at once, the program crashes. This happened before the recent Service Pack 1 was installed and continues to happen with the update.
This never occurred in my previous version X3, which allowed multiple lines of artistic text to be picked and adjusted in any way at once.
system info: the program: CorelDraw X5 (Service pack 1 installed); operating system: Vista Home Premium 32-bit (Service Pack 2 installed); computer: HP quad core media center PC with 3 GB RAM.
I tried to reproduce it unsuccessfully. Does it always happen? Does it happen on all text objects? Do you have a specific file you can reproduce it on?
yes ... i can't believe it. glad your not having this problem. I've reproduced this in several files, just tried it again in another file... I choose one piece of text (artistic or paragraph) and adjusting the character spacing works fine, but when I choose two or more and adjust the spacing it crashes immediately. Doesn't matter if it's a new file created in X5 or opening an old one created in X3, and it happens no matter what font or typestyle. Any ideas? My version X5 is an "upgrade" from X3.
Here are the steps I tried:
No crash, let me know if your steps differ. We won't be able to fix it unless we can reproduce it.

got a new clue! ... I followed all your steps one by one ... if I modify the character spacing value by highlighting and typing in a number (negative or positive) then hit enter, it seems to work fine ... but it crashes every time I use the up and down arrow buttons to the right of the value, or when I use the slider in-between the arrows.

Unfortunately, I tried all three methods when I was testing it. This points at live text, but I'm not sure why I can't reproduce it.
so what should I do at this point? do you think there's an incompatibility with some other program or something? Perhaps your test computer doesn't have much else besides Corel installed. (?)
I have Adobe CS4 installed for web design and I still have Corel Suite X3 installed, as well as Corel VideoStudio Pro X3. do you think something got corrupted during X5 installation, requiring a re-install? (again, my version is an Upgrade, with physical disc, not download)
note: I am an approved Corel Partner and I've been using CorelDraw since version 1, so I'm a professional user and accustomed to trying all methods of troubleshooting to get Corel, and other software, to work.
so if you suggest re-intalling X5 or anything else, please let me know. or maybe there are other Corel employees over there who might have an idea.
thanks for your help with this.

I doubt that it would be related to other software (other than maybe drivers), would you be willing to use procdump (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/dd996900.aspx) and send me a dump file of the crash?
yes i am ... never used that before. I will download it and try to figure out how to use it tonight. Again, thanks for all your help with this problem.
Hihave you tried the magical F8 trick yet? You are an experienced user but sometimes we all tend to over look the basic things and start wondering about the big things.
Peace I-)
not sure what you mean by "magical F8" key ... I'm aware that the F8 toggles to the text cursor in CorelDaraw, but that's not the problem here. Can you give me details on what you are referring to?
I cannot figure out how to use Procdump to capture this Corel crash. the Procdump web site does not offer much in the way of instructions, only parameters that I'm confused about. Can you give me a quick "crash" course (pun not intended) on what I have to do to supply you with the information you need?

Yeah, sorry, procdump is a bit geeky
In the command prompt, navigate to the folder where procdump.exe is located. Then type:
procdump -e coreldrw.exe c:\coreldraw.dmp
Now run Draw and try to crash it. If all goes well, this should create the file "coreldrw.dmp" in c:\ when draw crashes.

Press and Hold down F8 key on the startup of CorelDraw, it will prompt you to restore coreldraw to factory defaults, confirm it. It will wipe out all your customizations though.
procdump is not working as you described. if I run the program before starting Corel is says that there is no program running by that name and quits. If I start it while Corel is already running, it closes Corel with no warning messages and produces no "dmp" file.
attached is a screen shot ... let me know what I'm doing wrong
