Hi guys, I had a few glitches with my system which I resolved but a casualty has been Corel Draw X5 which has always run perfectly well but I guess I have tweaked something in fixing the other problem and now it will not run.
If I click the icon within Program Files nothing happens. If I double- click a .cdr file which should be opened in Corel I get the error message "there was a problem sending the command to the program".
I've un- and re-installed several times, even gone through the registry and removed all references. There is no appdata for the program, each time I reinstall it's a clean install, so what am I missing?
At install stage, I get asked for my serial number, which I enter, then the install continues. I never get as far as the activation stage as the program never starts.
I don't think it's a Corel issue anyway, so much as a Windows 7 issue.
Can anyone think of something I can try to get this program running again? FYI everything else is running like a dream, Adobe CS5 and all - this is my only tricky app. Thanks in advance, Jo
Jo,
I don't know if you figured this out yet, but here is what I did to fix the same issue.
1. Go to C:\Program Files\Corel\CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X5\Programs
2. Right click on the "CorelDRW" application file.
3. Select properties.
4. Select the "Compatibility Tab"
5. Check "Run this program in compatibility mode for:
6. Select "Windows 7" in the drop down.
7. Select "Apply"
That solved the issue for me.
I believe it is a Corel problem, when X4 stopped working correctly Corel would not help, said they no longer support x4. I bought X5, they said would work with windows 7 64 bit, did not, same problems as x4. Setting compatability to windows 7 worked a while then stopped again.
Corel sent several llinks for x5, said it was not compatible with windows 7 as is, but have to download the patches. Still did not work, so I switched to xp and then back to windows 7 on compatability so worked a while again.
Corel should update their programs to whatever windows 7 is running. Other programs have updates and corel updates should take care of the problems.
It should not be my problem corel x5 does not work correctly with win7. I bought x5 specifically for win7.
Win 7 has many problems on my machines and most are correctable but you have to search and search for the solutions. I have even reinstalled the
operating system several times per dell because win7 just stopped working correctly. Both these suppliers have a lot to work on to
be considered reliable, in my opinion.

Hello Boppy; Try putting the DVD in and do a "Repair" instead of a install and see if that will work. you may just need to point the file types you want CorelDraw to open in the Windows setup.

I'm running X5 on Windows 7 64, and it's fine. Corel does have patches, and I applied all of them. So if you're having issues, it very much IS your problem - to figure out what the real cause of your particular issue is.
If you've done the obvious and installed all the patches for both Win7 and Corel X5, it's time to consider things like other software you may have loaded that could be causing a conflict, etc. Not saying that to be mean, either, but if we know a program works for others, it's time to go looking at what makes your machine unique, and you're the only one who can do that. Good luck.
My desk top has this problem but my laptop in the main is fine - if I do get the problem on my laptop it's only the first try of the day if I ask it to open the file again it does and is fine for the rest of the day.
I get the "There was a problem sending the command to the program" as well, mostly when double-clicking file formats I've assigned to CorelDRAW Suite X5 programs (PhotoPAINT X5 and CorelDRAW X5).
I don't know if this helps, but the patches for the X5 Suite can be found HERE.
As for getting any resolution or assistance from Corel, I've had no luck at all. Telling me to reinstall the entire suite time after time leads me to believe they have no interest in fixing the problem on their end.
Corel has done so little to help. I've used their products since the beginning and have fiercely defended them over Adobe's over-price, over-hyped programs, but I believe this will be my last Corel product. There are too many options with just as much (if not more) power, versatility, and stability than Corel's. The only reason to stay with Corel would be effective customer service and I've seen so little in that department it just doesn't make sense to stay.
Anyhow, I hope the link helps. Best of luck.
Hello Boppy; Something else I thought of don't for get the ( .Net ) files. I'm not sure which ones you need with X5.
Sometimes changing your default printer will help. Try using something like a PDF printer because it does not have to be physically connected to your computer. This will sometimes fix Word and Excel, too.
