I installed X6 (trial) last night for experimentation !
Went to work this morning in X5. Surprise ! PP5 won't open when I tried to modify a bitmap directly from Draw X5. The menu item where not available. I did an installation « Repair » for X5 and everything went to normal... except, now PP6 won't work when I tried to modify a photo from within DrawX6.
Anybody has the same problem ? Some solutions to make both installation work at the same time ?

The interaction between DRAW and PhotoPaint, is dependent upon the last version that was installed or repaired. Ergo, when you repaired the X5 version, all *.CPT files from either X5 or X6, end up being edited in X5 PP.
If you perform a repair with the X6 installation, any file in either version of DRAW that you invoke to edit the bitmap, will be done only in X6 PP.
Frankly, I would use X6 PP over X5, as it is an improvement and has a few X5 PP bugs squashed.

For me, it's one or the other ! Not both !
Right now, I can edit a bitmap object directly from X5 : double-clicking on the bitmap in CorelDrawX5 opens the bitmap in PP5. Nothing happens in when I try a bitmap in CorelDrawX6. The menu are grayed out.
I can actually use both X5 and the trial X6, the only thing that has changed is that my thumbnails only show the CDraw logo and not the content.

I can use both except for the problem I explained ealier !
The photo is taken from DrawX6 with the unavailable function (under the yellow rectangle) !

I cannot open PhotoPaint X5 from within CorelDraw X5, the Edit Bitmap Option is greyed out. I had not tried that option. However, I can open PP X6 from within CD X6, so it's one or the other.
If you « repair » the X5 installation, you'll get the opposite !
PPX5 will work from CDX5 but PPX6 won't work from CDX6…
I discover another « problem » : I cannot choose a scanner or scan from CDX6 or PPX6 !

The scanner problem that you are experiencing is due to the fact that you have the 64 bit CGS X6 installed and it is looking for a true 64 bit TWAIN interface, which is about as common as a passenger flight to Mars. I suggest that you use your X5 to scan a document and save the file then open it in X6 or install the 32 bit version of X6, if you are that heavily reliant upon your scanner.
Like you, when I use X6 and I have to scan something into DRAW or PP, I first scan it into either X5 or into Irfan and then bring that result into my 64 bit X6 CGS.
There will probably be a fix for the 64 bit CGS to 32 bit TWAIN interface in the first Service Pack, as Corel is aware of this problem and is working on a solution.

You only see this with 64 bit version of X6.Its because of scanner manufacturers not supplying full 64 bitdrivers. Now Corel is aware o fthis and said they will fix it with a WIA.
GOOD is that there is a solution durin gthe transition period: Read & get solution here http://coreldraw.com/forums/t/32038.aspx

Hugh, it seems to behave like you say, except for one thing: when you "fix" one version, you break the other. So when you install X6, you seem to break the "Edit bitmap" link from inside Draw. It will simply be greyed out. If they opened in PPX6 from Draw X5, I would be happy, but this is not good, it breaks the X5 installation, quite contrary to what everybody says, that you can have both installed so they can coexist without interfering.

That's the way it works here.
I had X4. I installed X6 (trial). Haven't done anything special. Bitmaps in X4 and X6 both open in photopaint X6. I'd imagine that would have happened in X5 too, provided that all previous versions were installed with standard options and X6 was the last to be installed.
FWIW, this is the way that it works.....the apps use the Windows clipboard to send info back and forth. Windows remembers one (main) application for a given file extension (in this case, CPT). Which ever version opens when you double click a file in windows explorer, will be the same version that Windows launches when DRAW puts a .CPT file on the clipboard and tells windows to give it to PHOTO-PAINT.

I'd also like to get some input on this. I need to use X5 for a little bit until I get my macros for X6 sorted and working. I just did a repair on X6 even though it's only a day or two old. The bitmap edit linking in X5 doesn't work, option grayed out. Bitmap editing in X6 works fine, goes to Paint X6 and back no problem. I just want Draw X5 to be able to edit a bitmap, don't care what program it uses. I do recall a registry hack, if I can find it, I'll post it here, in the meantime, any other suggestions besides "Do a repair on X6 install" which I already did to no avail?

I suppose it works that way, if the "Edit bitmap" menu isn't greyed out (X5). Which it is. I fixed ith though by resetting the global filter options for .ctp-files in PP5.
I don't know, I've tried everything. I have .CPT associated with paint X5 in the options dialog, unchecked the association in paint X6, right clicked a CPT file and used windows to set the default program to paint X5. Nothing. None of these let me edit a bitmap in Draw X5, the option is grayed out. Same for Draw 12 which I still have on hand. No edit bitmap option. I don't care what it uses to edit the bitmap, if it's paint X6, fine, but I need the option available. I even looked through the registry, tried a few tricks that worked before but none of them helped.
Anyone have any idea how I can get the draw X5 edit bitmap option back again?
