I have been running X5 on Win7 64 for over a year now and had very few issues. Now, it has become extremely slow to start (several minutes). If I have the task manager open when starting X5 it shows "Not responding" but, if left, it will eventually start. Once it's running, it behaves just fine. The only thing that has changed is my printer which went from a Brother 1435 to a Brother 2270. I have also been using a 2270 over a network for some time with no issues so I don't think that's it.
I've searched and searched but have not found anything that matches my issue so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Most likely this start up delay problem is caused by printer driver in network installation. First of all, try using latest driver for your printer ( April 25 2012 ) - http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public/us/ca/en/dlf/dlf/000000/004500/dlf004519.html?reg=us&c=ca&lang=en&prod=hl2270dw_all&type2=82&os=93&flang=4&dlid=dlf004519
If problem still persists, try to install printer driver locally, to make sure problem is indeed caused by network install. If this is the case you may try to install printer locally but select printer IP address as output port, usually this works.
Hope this helps

There are a few things that could cause the CGS suite to be slow on startup. Among them are:
Network Printer: To test this, create a real or imaginary printer on your system as a local printer and make it the default. Then start DRAW and see if it is faster.
Anit-Virus: If your files on local or on the network, your AV may be scanning each and every one of the CDR files, as these are really XIP files with a different file extension, *.cdr. Set your AV to ignore *.cdr files.
System Temp Directory: Many programs, when they run, create temporary files stored in the systems 'Temp' directory. Unfortunately, when the application exits, they do not clean up after their selves. so, eventually, the system Temp directory becomes quite large with files and directories that are no longer used, but does cause Windows to use up resources to scan through all the files and/or directories each time Windows has to access a temp file. Delete as many files as possible and then empty the Trash Can. Windows will not allow you to delete an actively used temp file.
Fonts: It is wonderful to have tons of fonts on your system, so that anytime you have a new design and it calls for a special font, it is at hand. But, the more fonts that you have active, the slower Windows will run. The optimum number of fonts to have active at any one time is around 400-600. More than that, and it will use up Windows resources to manage the fonts. If you need to have many, many fonts on your system, think about moving all the non-Windows fonts to a directory outside of the Windows directory tree and then use a font manager to activate/deactivate them as you need them. Bitstream Font Navigator comes with your CGS installation, just for that purpose.
This should get you started on where to look to see if one or more of these things can help speed up your system. The other things that may affect the speed of Corel Graphics Suite, are updates to X5 and those to your Windows .Net. Make sure you are up to date on both of these areas.

Thanks for the quick response. Unfortunately, I did everything there none of it had any effect. I have also run the Windows Memory Diagnostics and it showed no errors.
I'm close to losing my mind on this. It is so strange that on Thursday all was well and On Friday this happens.
What programs or updates were installed since Thursday? You may consider doing a (Windows) System Restore back to Thursday, if you can not find out what started slowing your system down.
Nothing installed but new printer. Did the restore point to no avail. Even re-installed from an April 29th system image. This makes me think hardware but I don't know what.
One more item to try, put the DVD into the drive and when the Corel Installer menu comes up, select "Repair" to see if that will correct this problem.
hi
go to "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Corel\CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X5\Draw", then you can delete "CORELDRW.CDT".I am not sure but in some cases this would be help.
Tried the repair and still have the same problem. Don't seem to be able to find the .cdt, this is Win7 so maybe the path is different.
I'm leaning towards some kind of hardware issue because of the restored working image. I just don't know what to look for.
Do I understand you correctly that you have in fact tried the latest WHQL driver v 1.04 for Brother 2270 and it did not resolve your problem?
Also, your printer has "intelligent sleep" mode that might be a culprit. Try to turn it off both in the printer and in the driver ( Advanced tab, "Other PrintOptions" dialog )
I just downloaded, what appears to be, the latest driver for 64bit. It shows in the properties as ver.1.00 en-US. The 1.04 version appears to be for 32bit, does that make sense?
The Auto Sleep was set to "Printer default". I set it to manual for 20 minutes. When you say in the printer and the driver, where would I set it in the printer?
Click on the link from the first reply- http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public/us/ca/en/dlf/dlf/000000/004500/dlf004519.html?reg=us&c=ca&lang=en&prod=hl2270dw_all&type2=82&os=93&flang=4&dlid=dlf004519. It points to latest WHQL 64-bit driver for Windows 7.
You are right, there is no OSD menu on this printer, so there is no way to change the default sleep timer, it is set by factory.
