CorelDraw 12 on Vista - Double-clicking file CDR not being recognized

    Hello,

Recently, (stupidly), I have had a new computer provided to me.  It has Vista Professional installed with CorelDRAW 12 and the CD12 SP1 update.

A bizarre thing, when I double-click a CDR file it is not being recognized.  Neither on a network share or on the local disk.  I receive an error, that Corel cannot find the file in question.

If I open the file from within Corel no problems.  If I slide the file from explorer, with the mouse, into the Corel window, no problmes.  If I "send" the file to Corel with the right mouse button, no problems.

Has anyone else run into this kind of problem, in the interpretation of the complete "path\filename".

I modified the registry so that anytime I access CDR files it will be CorelDRAW 12 that opens them, to no avail.

Thanks for your time in responding to my request :-)

     Hey dcray!

I can't figure out what's wrong. But then again, i can't figure out why this problem should even be a problem to you in the first place, except if you intend to just view the file in question. Then this would be an irritation, since corel takes time to load. If you've got a problem with that, then i suggest you export all your corel diagrams to a simple viewable format like JPEG and store them all in a seperate folder. So if all you'll be doing is viewing your files, you can simply open the JPEG folder. Makes perusing your files much faster and easier...

    Cheerio!

honestly I do not know what is happening yet it is my understanding that V12 has not been approved or updated for VISTA and will not be updated. Possible this might have something to do with your issues

You have been fortunate to even install v12 on a Vista system, as it's not supported. So I would think you've found a limitation between the Corel version and the new operating system.

Re: CorelDraw 12 on Vista - Double-clicking file CDR not being recognized

I believe it's a problem with the way CD12 is parsing the "path\filename" location.  When I double-click the CDR file within explorer, as any typical user would want to do, and as all my other applications successfully open their files when double-clicked, Corel opens with a blank window and I receive an error message that it "Cannot find the file specified" in the double-click.

There is an underlying issue with the way CorelDRAW 12  is able to interpret the path\filename, that wasn't, of course, a problem under XP.

CD12, under XP, opens the files without any problems, hiccups, or hyperboles.

I am just wondering is someone knows why that might be happening under Vista, as Vista is more a black-hole of uncertainty than a white-light of hope.

    :-)

    Thanks

Thanks Scott.  I was wondering if it would probably have something to do with that, like my version of Acrobat PRO 7, which is no longer an item I can consider.

However, as I mentioned CD12 is only having a problem in opening the file directly thorough the double-click.  All other options work, however, as I am having to also support the other users within the company, who are not as tolerant or malleable as I, I need to find a workaround, that is not going to cost us, (me), a strip off the the old hind quarters; so to speak.

    Answer

I actually like Vista, perhaps in the minority still. It was a bitter pill to realize after I upgraded just how much more it would cost me with software upgrades. Some of it has run well, some of it has run marginally, and the rest well... I have read mixed reviews on CD v12, from not installing, or hiccuping and finally installing, to your situation of installing and running with issues. If you want to run CorelDRAW on a Vista system your best bet is to upgrade.

I do not own Corel, but figured I would mention that this issue appears to be tied to the UAC (User Account Control) of Vista.  If you disable UAC this problem should go away.

I had this problem with my V12 and I was trying to associate the extension (.tif, .jpg, etc) with Corel PhotoPaint in Windows (XP in my case). WRONG!

This may not work in Vista but it might be worth a try...

Go to Tools>Options>Global>Filters>Associate and make sure that CDR checked and anything else that you want to open with CorelDraw 12 when you double click.

I also had to go into set the file type back to its defaults within XP in Tools>Folder Options>File Types in a windows explorer window.Otherwise I was finding that even if I already had a CorelDraw window open, a new corel window was opening when I double clicked on a new associated file rather than it opening within the existing window.

I do not know how Vista works but I guess it is similar?
