Ventura on 64 Bit - So far so good...

Discouraged in CNEWS and here on finding a solution on running Ventura 10 on Vista 64 Bit , I sought a way to install the program anyway.

Create a directory on the desktop, copy the entire Ventura CD into the folder. Select the Setup32.exe file and right click and choose properties. Set compatibility to XP. Check Run as Administrator.

Double Click the file and Ventura installs.

It launches and appears to run but I shall do some more testing.

    Rikk --

Please keep us posted. If you manage to pull it off, I'd like to put it in the FAQ (with credit to you, of course).

    Hi Rikk,

On Vista Ultimate 64 bit, tried what you did, Ventura 10 ran once perfectly.

The next time I ran Ventura 10, I got a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Error.

    Program: ... (x86)\Corel\Ventura 10\Programs\ventura.exe abnormal program termination.

This is a real pity, because I love Ventura 10, and I would really like it to work under Vista 64 bit.

    Cheers, Jonathan

Well, I am doing slightly better. I did get it to open initially. THen, I got the same message you did. Then, I double clicked on exisitng VP files and they opened. Close them and the error appears on the next opening. I am still working on it.

So far Ventura is the only program not successfully migrated to X64 (I am using Home Premium version )

Give me a couple of days and I will see if I can figure out where it is hanging.

That's the spirit! Never let the computer win! ;-)

I suspect you've already done this, but just in case, is the compatibility set to WinXP for ventura.exe?

Re: Ventura on 64 Bit - So far so good...

I have. Actually, I am trying combinations of ventura executables in various compatiblity states. There is something about the intitial launch that works and subsequents not. That is a key I have to decipher.

With my new Vista 64 laptop, I have exactly three  four things that don't work right.

    Ventura

Quicktime (no 64 bit compatible version yet)

    VN-2100PC Olympus Voice Recorder

    Canon 20D

The latter are missing 64 bit drivers and are obsolete so there's not much hope.  I will likely write drivers for the first two based on the 32 bit drivers but Ventura --- That is another animal all together.  I would hate to have to use Indezign... it works (anyone listening.) That was a big echo!

Eric, I will do my darndest.

I've pretty much followed what Rikk has done in trying to get Ventura to work.

I also cannot get Canon EOS1Ds, 1Ds Mk II or Mk III to work - it seems that Canon are not interested in supporting 64 bit.

I have a Windows XP Pro laptop dedicated to downloading from the cameras and then from there to the server for storage etc.

Re: Ventura on 64 Bit - So far so good...

700.00 Consumer machines are available today at your local electronics store with Vista 64 Bit OS standard. People are buying these machines today.

Hardware manufacturers need to realize I am not going to replace a 1300.00 camera to make it work with a 700.00 laptop.  But I might not buy their brand next time because I know it will be obsolete with a new software platform.

Software makers likewise need to realize that applications such as Ventura are used for YEARS (since 2002) and that patches-at minimum-are requisite for keeping them in the game. Ventura must be updated to run on X64. Otherwise, if I have to revert to Indesign, I am more likely to expand my use of other CS3 products that means Draw and PhotoPaint become at risk. I loaded 48 applications and numerous applets onto my new machine and Ventura and Quicktime are the only two that don't work. All in all, that isn't too bad but they are programs I use weekly if not more often.

There was a poll here on the forum a while back (I can't find it right now) showing OS penetration. There were a few 64 Bit OSs creeping in and it will be growing.

Ventura must continue to run. If I can't find a way to make it run on X64 and Corel won't release a patch then I am being asked to buy another product.

Till then, I will continue to tweak Ventura and see if I can get it working reliably.  I almost hope I don't. It would be great news for the Ventura community but it lets Corel off the hook in deciding and implementing a forward-looking solution with regards to Ventura.

    End Rant.

First of all I did the same thing to get it to work. I copied the entire Install Disk to a temp Directory on my C:\ drive.  Set the compatibility to Windows 2000 and full Administrator rights.  After installing I received the C++ error after second attempt to launch.

I was working with my MCSD, we discovered that if you copy the "mfc42.dll" from the directory I created on my C: dirve "C:\TEMP\VenturaInstall\System32\Redist\MS\System" everything is fine now. And Fast.

Biggest problem I have is my Font Library and trying to get that installed under Vista 64

Re: Ventura on 64 Bit - So far so good...

Crap! This lets Corel off the hook. If you drop the mfc42.dll from the Ventura Installation Disk into the C:\Program Files (x86) \Corel\Ventura10\Programs\ directory. The program will launch if you say "Run as Administrator"

After it runs the first time, you can turn off the Win 2000 Compatability and then it will launch normally and appears to run (and run very fast as BLH Graphic states).  I will test over the weekend and get back to you. The fonts seem to be working here but I wager that Font Navigator won't sub and install on the fly.

    Well done!

This is really good news. I did as above, and have got Ventura 10 to work.

I will be testing the fonts later thjis weekend.

    Well done!

Re: Ventura on 64 Bit - So far so good... Preliminary Results

After some testing I can report that under 64 Bit OS of Vista Home Premium:

Ventura will open V8 and V10 documents.

    It will publish to PDF.

It will print single page and multipage.

It will print across a network.

    It will do impositions.

    It will do separations.

It will do imposition and separation.

Font Substitution is not as it was in XP but about the same as in Vista 32 bit.

The only anomalous behavior I have seen so far is that if you double click a Ventura file it will launch V10 and ignore missing fonts. If you go to print however, you will get the Panose dialog before printing.

And it appears to be quick in its operations and whether by OS or design (I am guessing OS), it is using both cores of the processor.

I have not tested Database Publisher as I seldom use it any more.

Re: Ventura on 64 Bit - So far so good... Preliminary Results

After a weekend of testing, I am tentatively endorsing Ventura 10 on Vista 64 bit for production use.

I encountered no serious problems during my testing.  I will see if I can simplify the installation instructions and post them so that Eric W. can get them on the Ventura FAQ.  I still haven't started testing Database Publisher as I have no files traveling with me that used them.
