Attachment file formats – why not zip?

Attachment file formats – why not zip?

As I was to attach a cdr file last night to a post here and the cdr file was too heavy (there is a 250 kB limit isn't it? Or was that just in the beta forum?), I decided to use WinZip to compress it. It worked fine and the file size went down from 750 kB to 125 kB. But when posting it I got an error message asying zip files, among others, are not allowed. How come? The zip format is great for compressing, and besides, Corel owns WinZip and should encourage it use, no? In this case I just renamed the extension to .txt, but why making us bother with that?

After doing this I came to wonder about how a cdr file from Draw X4 could be compressed so much. The new cdr format is said to already be a zip file, so how can it be compressed further?

    Hello Lars,

the main reason for not allowing Zip files in forum attachments is because we are currently not able to scan the inside of the file for viruses and other unwanted content. You can upload Zip files in the community downloads section and link to it though.

The X4 CDR Zip file uses a very standard Zip compression that is understood by any Unzip apps (including the one built-in Windows) that isn't as optimized as other compression algorithms that are included in WinZip. We also had to find the right balance between compressing the file and time of compressing the file.

     Hello Gérard,

Thank you for explaining. I suppose I can always rename the extension like I did. It works rather fast.
