PROBLEM EXPORTING FOR A CLIENT WITH ADOBE PHOTOSHOP

     Hi All,

I have been using Corel since verion 3, so I am not a beginner...although I am self-taught. I have a client that has sent a pdf which I created to a yellow pages company that is using AdobePhotoshop. Since I don't use Photoshop, I don't know what to tell them. They say that the pdf does not come in as layers in Adobe and they need the ad in layers to translate it into another language. When I import the pdf back into CorelDraw, it comes in as layers just fine.

They also claim they have full version Adobe Acrobat, so I suggested opening the file there and extracting the pages. This doesn't seem to satisfy them. I also tried exporting as an eps and also AI (Adobe Illustrator file) but without success.

Any ideas....they are driving me nuts!

Jill, stick to your guns, you are right.  Acrobat is the de facto standard for editing PDF's. Tell them Photoshop is the wrong progamme to open a PDF with, Phototshop is for IMAGES. You don't need to export as AI, Illustrator (from CS onwards I think, uses the PDF format for its files) will open it, tell them to try that.

If you provided artwork that is ready for print tell them not to mess with it, just place it in their layout software (likely to be Quark or InDesign). Fax or email them a copy of the artwork as a bitmap so they know that you know what it should look like and that any alterations will not be tolerated unless you and/or your client agree to them in writing.

    Best regards

Photoshop can only rasterize a PDF so it creates a single bitmap of everything in the file.  You have  a real winner on your hands.

Re: PROBLEM EXPORTING FOR A CLIENT WITH ADOBE PHOTOSHOP

    Hey guys,

Thanks for the support! I knew that Adobe Photoshop is basically like Corel PhotoPaint. I was just starting to get self-doubt...LOL. You would think an organization putting out yellow pages professionally should know what they are doing, but apparently NOT! I gave them a background image and a separate text document and told them they would have to have at it....I was DONE (and luckily already paid).

Then the client calls back and says they will be in touch if there are any further issues (and I'm thinking...please don't be). They only get one ad about every two years....so I could care at this point if I ever see them again.

Nice to know there are people who can relate and to vent to. It's just me, myself and I here.

    Warmly,
    Jill

If they insist to use Photoshop, you can export the ad to PSD file, and Maintain Layers.

I tried that, but it didn't maintain the layers even though I told it to. Don't have any idea why....could it have been too complex?

Do you have layers in your drawing? Layers not Objects…

Each layer (not each object) in your drawing will be exported as one layer in the PSD file.

    Hi again,

I think you have hit the nail on the head. I have just upgraded to X4 and the new layer feature is something I have not started using. I need to read up more on how to work with layers. I always thought I was working with layers in the past because of the move to the back or behind...etc. Guess that was happening all on one layer.

One question before I go. If I have a document created that I didn't use layers on like this ad, can I add layers after the fact to have the text on one layer and the art on another? Or would I have to start from scratch and recreate the ad?

    Thanking you in advance,

    Jill

    Sure.

A couple of things some users don't realize about layers
    1. Layer manager view is extremely useful. Icon at top of object manager.
    2. In layer manager view you can reposition the layer(s). Simply drag the layer to the vertical position you want it.
    3. Turn printing, viewing and editing any layer off or on in the layer manager (icons). Note VIEWING and PRINTING are completely independent of each other.
    4. and this is what you need--- simply drag any item(s) needed to the layer in the object manager to put them on that layer. (In your case, for example, you could do a "find all text " and simply drag a;; text objects at once to your "text" layer.
    5. layers can easily be named

no, just open your file again, create a layer 2 and drag your text or image to the layer in the layer manager. really easy. in all vector programs there are objects and then layers, Illustrator is the same, as is Fireworks, layers can have multiple objects. i routinely export DRAW files to Photoshop with layers intact. seems to me the people you're dealing with only have PS, and how do they think they can change the text in it? your PDF will be rasterized totally on import to PS... i guess they just want the option to delete the text layer.
