Reminds me of a Movie called "Memoirs of a Geisha"
Actually, your comments are dead on target.
All of them are vectors (using the blend tool) and transparencies as highlights such as shadows and reflections. I still have yet to use the mesh fill as I rarely use this in my work, especially when my clients require an Illustrator format for printing and I must convert .cdr files into .AI format.
This was actually inspired by a poster of the movie "Memoirs of a Geisha".
