An old cover illustration made in jan/febr. 2004. For a Swedish computer magazine about security. The cover article was about EMP weapons. I draw the human figure by hand, scanned, and all the rest of colouring and such was made with Corel Photo-Paint.

It reads on the cover: "EMP - only in the world of comics?"

What I dont understand was and still is, why the art director had to place the text right on top of the human figure. It felt so strange. I have had discussions with a few graphic designer/art directors through the years, and it kind of is two "schools". Either you "prefer" to place it over an illustration like this, or you dont. Some I´ve talked to would never do it, and some does.

What is your opinion on this about text right across the human figure. I mean it was more space to put it.

IMHO I wouldn't have done it in THIS Illustration. It depends on the Illustration itself. There is enough space for the text elsewhere than over the comic guy, cause he is the visual focus on that cover, and to get more dynamic its always better to use diagonal relations between text and image. I would have placed it in the top left corner under the mag title.

I also can understand the director: maybe he had to recognize that the title must pop into eye even when this mag is covered by other magazines in a shelve.

Hi Mo,

It was a SHE, not a HE who was the art director :-)

Yes, I can also understand the thinking of placement of the title of the article "EMP", but here in Sweden, magazines are useally taken out from the left, so the EMP title would be better on the left side, as you suggested. And On my trips to the USA and England, and Germany, basically everywhere in the western world, its either standing mags taken out of shelves from the left hand side or from above.

I would have prefered the EMP title to be on the left hand side of the cover, so the comic guy would be free from such bold title fonts.

Always fun to hear peoples views! :-)
