Microphone XLR Audio Adapter for DSLR Camera Video Shoots

Early this week I filmed some videos for CorelDRAW X6 Unleashed. Over the years I've spent hundreds of hours in front of a camera, but this was the first time the video was shot with a DSLR. One of the challenges with any video shoot is capturing the audio.

As we were getting all the equipment set up, I noticed the camera was equipped with a really cool adapter with XLR (microphone) inputs. For this shoot, we used a lavalier microphone plugged into the adapter. I was so curious about this cool adapter that I looked it up and found the BeachTek Passive Dual XLR Audio Adapter for DSLR Camcorders (pictured at right).

As you can see, it allows you to make adjustments to the audio and it sits just beneath the camera (most likely on a tripod). Should you be shooting an interview, it allows for two microphones to be used. This particular model does not include phantom power for condenser microphones. There is a separate adapter that does include a pre-amplifer with phantom power, the BeachTek Dual XLR Audio Adapter with Built-in Preamplifiers and Phantom Power for DSLR Cameras. If you are going to be filming with a DSLR, you'll want to consider getting one of these adapters.

Swivl Personal Cameraman Makes Shooting Videos of Yourself Easier

A few years ago I took a photography class where our final project was to shoot a self-portrait. While it seems easier enough to set the timer and jump in position, it is tricky to get everything just right.

Nowadays there are a bunch of people who not only need to take self-portraits, they are trying to shoot video of themselves. It is doable if you are in a stationary position, but gets more difficult if you are moving around. That's where the Swivl Personal Cameraman comes in handy.

It can work with all tripod-enabled pocket cameras (and phones) up to six ounces to follow you as you move. The Swivl base follows a marker by rotating and moving up and down. For those using an iPhone or iPod, the market also functions as a wireless microphone. While not yet supported on Android, I'm guessing support will be added at some point in the future.

Having the Swivl Personal Cameraman isn't as good as having a person working the camera, but it can be really handy for those occasions when you have to film yourself.

Corel Acquires Pinnacle Products from Avid

Sandwiched between the birthdays of Canada and the USA, Corel did some shopping for video editing software. They have now added a number of new video editors in the past few years which could lead to some consumer confusion, much the same as offering the vastly different Corel PHOTO-PAINT, Corel Paint Shop Pro and Corel Painter in the image editing space. Time will tell if this acquisition is good for the company, though it seems as if it is just one more distraction for the company.

Corel today announced that it has acquired Avid's consumer video editing product lines, including Pinnacle Studio™ HD and Avid® Studio.
